First Year of Live plus 35-Day Ratings Is a Historical Milestone in Evolving
Audience Measurement
CBS’ primetime entertainment series grew an average of +53% from its live plus same day average, according to 2016-2017 full season Nielsen Total Content Ratings (TCR). Based on TCR full season data, CBS’ entertainment series delivered an average of 12.1 million viewers on a live plus 35 day basis, +53% more than its live plus same day average (7.9m) and +15% greater than its live plus 7 day average (10.5m).
“With this first-ever reported full season data, TCR measurement continues to prove significant gains in viewers watching CBS’ television programming,” said David Poltrack, Chief Research Officer and President, CBS Vision, CBS Corporation. “With changing viewer habits and digital consumption on the rise, CBS has the ongoing opportunity to grow our audience, offer viewers greater access to our content and to expand options for our advertisers. And now that YouTube TV and Hulu’s new TV streaming services are being counted by Nielsen, we expect an even greater boost in our viewership numbers going forward, along with more opportunities to monetize delayed viewing.”
The first full season of live plus 35 data represents a historical milestone in television audience measurement as it captures for the first time uncounted viewers not initially reported in linear TV ratings over live plus same day and live plus 7-day windows and devices. Next season, Nielsen plans to incorporate additional delayed viewership across new platforms including digital and the rapidly expanding universe of OTT services, which will boost live plus 35-day TCR metrics even more.
Among viewers, CBS’ largest gainers were THE BIG BANG THEORY (+9.26m), NCIS (+6.34m), BULL (+6.49m) and BLUE BLOODS (+6.37m). On a percentage basis, among the series posting the greatest live plus 35-day increases were ELEMENTARY (+86%), CODE BLACK (+79%), SCORPION (+76%) and CRIMINAL MINDS (+75%).

“48 HOURS: MURDER IN THE MANSION” IS SATURDAY’S #1 PROGRAM IN VIEWERS
(L-R) Andrea Wilborn, Priscilla and Cullen Davis
48 HOURS: “Murder in the Mansion” was Saturday’s #1 program with viewers, according to Nielsen live plus same day ratings for May 13.
At 10:00 PM, the broadcast delivered 4.04 million viewers and a 0.9/03 with adults 25-54, the demographic that matters most to those who advertise in news.
Also, an encore of 48 HOURS: LIVE TO TELL: “My Name is Victoria” was #1 at 8:00 PM with viewers. The broadcast delivered 3.06 million viewers and a 0.6/02 with adults 25-54.
“Murder in the Mansion” featured Maureen Maher and 48 HOURS’ investigation into one of the most notorious cases in Texas history – an ambush in a lavish mansion that left two people wounded and two people dead, one of them a child. To this day, no one has been held accountable.
On the night of August 2, 1976, former college basketball star Stan Farr and his date, Priscilla Davis, a petite soon-to-be-divorcee, returned to her home after a night on the town with friends and met a man dressed in black and a hail of bullets. When the gunfire ended, Farr was dead, while Priscilla Davis and one of her friends were wounded. Also dead was Andrea Wilborn, Priscilla’s 12-year-old daughter from a previous marriage, who was believed to have been shot before the adults got home. At the time she was shot, Priscilla Davis was going through a brutal divorce from her husband, oil millionaire Cullen Davis. She wanted $50 million to settle the divorce. While they battled it out, a judge ordered Cullen out of their mansion. Priscilla Davis had taken up with Farr.
After the shootings, Priscilla and her wounded friend both identified Cullen as the man in black. Cullen Davis, then worth an estimated $500 million, hired Richard Haynes, the most famous defense attorney in Texas at the time, who was nicknamed “Racehorse.” Haynes took what may have been an open-and-shut case and turned it on its head. And that was just the beginning.
48 HOURS: “Murder in the Mansion” is produced by Chuck Stevenson and Gail Abbott Zimmerman. Lucy Scott and Claire St. Amant are the development producers. Gary Winter, Michelle Harris, Michael McHugh and George Baluzy are the editors. Judy Tygard is the senior producer. Susan Zirinsky is the senior executive producer.
48 HOURS: LIVE TO TELL: “My Name is Victoria” is produced by Peter Shaw and Anthony Venditti. Lauren Clark is the field producer. Michael McHugh and Doreen Schechter are the producer-editors. Jud Johnston and Grayce Arlotta-Berner are the editors. Judy Tygard is the series creator and senior producer. Susan Zirinsky is the senior executive producer.

48 HOURS: “Death on Valentine’s Day” was Saturday night’s #1 non-sports broadcast with viewers and adults 24-54, according to Nielsen live plus same day ratings for March 18. 48 HOURS (10:34-11:34PM) delivered 4.07 million viewers and a 1.1/04 in adults 25-54, the demographic that matters most to those who advertise in news.
Saturday’s broadcast featured Maureen Maher and 48 HOURS’ investigation into the death of a Quincy, Ill., mother and the case against her husband, a former prosecutor. Curtis Lovelace was a former Big Ten football star, who seemed to have everything – a good job, a beautiful wife and four children. But then, on Valentine’s Day 2006, after dropping three of their four children off at school, Curtis found his wife Cory dead in their bed.
The cause of death was initially labeled “undetermined,” and the investigation was stalled for eight years until a newly promoted detective took a fresh look at the file. Clues in the case file led him to believe Cory Lovelace was suffocated. In 2014, eight years after Cory’s death, Curtis Lovelace was arrested and charged with her murder. The first trial ended with a hung jury. A year later, in a second trial, Lovelace was found not guilty.
In his first television interview, Lovelace talked with Maher about finding his wife dead that day, the two trials since and his life today.

David Spungen, Jud Johnston, Kevin Dean and Michelle Harris are the editors. Anthony Batson is the senior broadcast producer. Susan Zirinsky is the senior executive producer.

Television’s #1 comedy, #1 new drama and #1 drama all grew substantially from their live plus same day averages with “The Big Bang Theory” up +67%, “Bull”+56% and NCIS +43%
Viewing of CBS’ Entertainment Series Exceeds Live Viewing of 15 Years Ago
Measurement of Online and Mobile Viewing To Be Added at a Later Date
CBS’ primetime entertainment series grew an average of +54% from its live plus same day average, according to the first ever Nielsen Total Content Ratings (TCR) which measures the first 13 weeks of the 2016-2017 season. Nielsen’s new TCR measures live plus 35 day viewing across multiple viewing platforms including VOD, TV and DVR. Measurement of online and mobile viewing is still in development and not included in this metric.
Based on TCR season to date data through week 13, CBS’ entertainment series delivered an average of 13.39m viewers on a live plus 35 day basis, +54% more than its live plus same day average of 8.71m and +15% greater than its live plus 7 day average (11.62m). “The CBS Television Network is already the most watched content platform in the world, and these new metrics demonstrate that, as people’s viewing habits change, our position of strength only grows,” said David Poltrack, Chief Research Officer, CBS Corporation and President, CBS VISION. “This brand new data is a potentially very valuable media planning tool for our clients and their agencies. It certainly adds a new dimension to an advertiser’s program selection process, as well as more clarity about the true incremental viewing that is of enormous and increasing value in today’s changing landscape.”

48 HOURS: “Guilty until Proven Innocent” was Saturday’s #1 program with viewers, according to Nielsen live plus same day ratings for Feb. 4.
48 HOURS (10:00-11:00 PM) delivered 4.50 million viewers and a 1.0/03 with adults 25-54, the demographic desired most by those who advertise in news.
Saturday’s broadcast featured Maureen Maher and 48 HOURS’ report on the case against two Indiana men for a 1989 rape. Darryl Pinkins and Roosevelt Glenn vowed they had nothing to do with the brutal rape, and DNA evidence at the time did not tie either man to the case. Yet they both were convicted. At the time of the trial, investigators had a pair of workman coveralls – the kind worn at the shop where Pinkins and Glenn worked – and a victim who said she could identify one of her five alleged attackers. They also had the DNA evidence.
Pinkins and Glenn’s fate seemed to be sealed – behind bars – until their cases drew the attention of Indiana law professor Fran Watson, who, along with her students over a 15-year period, continued to dig into the case and search for clues. Everything changed for them when a new technology called TrueAllele came along, which could separate the genetic mixture in the DNA evidence. The technology cleared them both and today they are free men.
48 HOURS: “Guilty until Proven Innocent” is produced by Judy Rybak. Alicia Tejada is the field producer. Mike Baluzy is the producer-editor. George Baluzy is the editor. Nancy Kramer is the executive story editor. Peter Schweitzer is the senior producer. Susan Zirinsky is the senior executive producer.

At 10:00 PM, 48 HOURS delivered 5.00 million viewers and a 1.1/04 with adults 25-54, the demographic that matters most to those who advertise in news. Compared to the previous week, 48 HOURS added +500,000 viewers (up +11% from 4.50m) and was even in adults 25-54. This was 48 HOURS second largest audience of the season. Compared to the same night last year, 48 HOURS was up +16% in viewers.
Saturday’s broadcast featured Erin Moriarty and 48 HOURS’s report on the investigation into a hard-to-close murder case that has perplexed local police and private investigators since Kay Wenal, a well-liked, former model was found brutally murdered inside the Gwinnett County, Ga., home she shared with her real-estate millionaire husband in May of 2008.
Wenal’s murder case has been difficult to solve because the only blood found at the horrific scene belonged to the victim. There were no fingerprints or footprints, no evidence of a break-in and the killer took the weapon with him, police and investigators say. Her husband, Hal Wenal, had a solid alibi, and Kay didn’t seem to have any enemies. But police do have some clues – an expletive-filled cut-and-paste note about the murder, and a sketch of an unknown man seen by a neighbor the day before and the day of the murder.
48 HOURS: SOLVE THIS CASE: “Who Killed Kay Wenal?” is produced by Lisa Freed and Michelle Feuer. Alicia Tejada is the field producer. Phil Tangel, Gregory F. McLaughlin and George Baluzy are the editors. Judy Tygard is the senior producer. Susan Zirinsky is the senior executive producer.

ANOTHER STRONG WEEK FOR “THE LATE SHOW WITH STEPHEN COLBERT”
Narrows Gap With “The Tonight Show” to 8,000 Viewers, Closest Competitive Finish
Since Premiere Week in September 2015
Inaugural Night Broadcast Delivers Most Watched Friday
Since Series Premiere Week in September 2015
“The Late Show” Audience Grows +6% Over the Same Week a Year Ago
CBS’ THE LATE SHOW with STEPHEN COLBERT delivered another strong week, finishing in its closest competitive position to “The Tonight Show” in viewers since the series premiere in September 2015, according to Nielsen live plus same day ratings for the week ending Jan. 20.
For the week, THE LATE SHOW (2.842m) narrowed the gap with “The Tonight Show” (2.850m) to just 8,000 viewers, the closest finish with original broadcasts since Colbert’s debut the week of Sept. 8, 2015. THE LATE SHOW was up +6% versus the same week a year ago.
This ranks as THE LATE SHOW’s third most watched week this season, with two of those three weeks occurring since the beginning of January 2017.
On Inauguration Friday, THE LATE SHOW averaged 3.35m viewers, 0.9/04 in adults 25-54, 0.6/03 in adults 18-49 and 0.3/02 in adults 18-34. THE LATE SHOW delivered its second best Friday viewer total (behind the Friday broadcast during the program's premiere week in September 2015), matched its best ever Friday adults 25-54 rating, and posted its best Friday adults 18-49 rating since June 24, 2016.
“48 HOURS: DEVIL’S ISLAND” IS SATURDAY’S #1 PROGRAM WITH VIEWERS
(L-R): Jennifer Harbison, Sarah Harbison, Amy Ayers, and Eliza Thomas; Yvonne Baldelli and Brian Brimager.
48 HOURS: “Devil’s Island” was Saturday’s #1 program with viewers, according to Nielsen live plus same day ratings for Jan. 21.
48 HOURS: “Devil’s Island” (10:00-11:00 PM, ET) delivered 4.50 million viewers and a 1.1/03 with adults 25-54, the demographic that matters most to those who advertise in news. Compared to the last first-run episode on Jan. 7, 48 HOURS was up +38% in adults 25-54 (from 0.8/02) and added +1.01m viewers (from 3.49m, +29%).
48 HOURS: “Innocence Lost” was Saturday’s #2 program with viewers, according to Nielsen. “Innocence Lost” delivered 3.88 million viewers and a 0.9/03 with adults 25-54.
“Devil’s Island” featured Peter Van Sant and 48 HOURS’ investigation into the death of Yvonne Baldelli, who moved to Panama with her boyfriend and never returned alive. However, Baldelli’s boyfriend, Brian Brimager, made it out and returned to California alone, where police learned he was leading a second life that included a new wife. The investigation into Baldelli’s disappearance led through the swamps of Panama and back to San Diego. Relying on a little used Federal law, prosecutors charged Brimager for Balldelli’s murder in the United States, even though the crime allegedly occurred in Panama. Brimager first pleaded not guilty to the murder charge and all felonies, but new evidence forced him to rethink that decision.
“Innocence Lost” featured Erin Moriarty and 48 HOURS’ report on the latest twist, that she’s been covering since 1991, in the shocking murders of four teenage girls in an Austin, Texas yogurt shop. Police tracked every tip and even interrogated four teenagers. The investigation dragged on until 1999, when new detectives announced they’d made four arrests – the same four teenagers interviewed in 1991. Eventually charges against two of the teens were dropped, but two others went on trial and were convicted. However, the case was far from over. In 2009, the two convictions were overturned. Then, in a totally unexpected twist, the district attorney ran some DNA tests, which do not link any of the four men to the murders.
48 HOURS: “Innocence Lost” is produced by Chuck Stevenson, Gail Zimmerman and Peter Henderson. Claire St. Amant is the field producer. Mike McHugh, Jud Johnston, Gary Winter and Phil Tangel are the editors. Patti Aronofsky is the senior producer. Susan Zirinsky is the senior executive producer.
48 HOURS: “Devil’s Island” is produced by Chris O’Connell. Cindy Cesare and Ryan Smith are the field producers. Marcus Balsam, Marlon Disla, Michael Vele and Alan Miller are the editors. Anthony Batson is the senior broadcast producer. Susan Zirinsky is the senior executive producer.
