NEWSONE NOW: GUEST HOST MICHELLE BERNARD SPEAKS WITH CONGRESSMAN BENNIE THOMPSON ON POTENTIAL RE-OPENING OF EMMETT TILL CASE

NEWSONE NOW: GUEST HOST MICHELLE BERNARD SPEAKS WITH CONGRESSMAN BENNIE THOMPSON ON POTENTIAL RE-OPENING OF EMMETT TILL CASE; DISCUSSES STEVE BANNON’S REMOVAL FROM NATIONAL SECURITY COUNCIL

WASHINGTON, D.C. APRIL 6, 2017 — This morning on NewsOne Now, guest host Michelle Bernard spoke with Rep. Bennie Thompson (D–MS) about the Justice Department’s potential decision to re-open the 1955 Emmett Till Murder Case. Till was gruesomely murdered in Mississippi by J.W. Milam and Roy Bryant, the brother-in-law and husband of Caroline Bryant, whom Till allegedly made sexual advances towards. It was revealed in January, however, that Bryant’s testimony was false, and in light of the new investigation the Justice Department is considering re-opening the case. Thomas represents Tallahatchie County, the county where the murder occurred in Mississippi.

“A lot of us who have been following this case for quite a while clearly believe that the evidence is there. Especially when you have a witness. The primary witness in the case who’s recanted their story. And it’s not like we heard the recant- this person had admitted. Anybody who has any knowledge of the Emmett Till case understands that this was one of most horrific murders during the Civil Rights Era,” says Thompson, who also has the support of members of congress in his efforts. “This is kind of an all-hands-on-deck effort. We’ve created the cold case files dealing with civil rights atrocities. We can’t rest until every perpetrator of any of those dastardly deeds is prosecuted, so we continue to pursue it. I’m prepared to continue to pursue it. This is just a step along the way to get justice for the Emmett Till family.”

Bernard also spoke with Malcolm Nance, counterterrorism and terrorism consultant and author of the book “The Plot to Hack America: How Putin’s Cyberspies and WikiLeaks Tried to Steal the 2016 Election,” about President Trump’s decision to remove his chief strategist Steve Bannon as a principal member of the National Security Council. It was stated by the White House that Bannon was brought in to keep an eye on former national security advisor Michael Flynn, but Flynn has since resigned and was replaced by Lieutenant General H.R. McMaster.

“I think [Bannon] intended to take the United States via the National Security Council into this empire-style dimension where political philosophy would drive every aspect of the national security state. General McMaster has restored the National Security Council to the position that the president wanted and that the president needs. And that president would be President Obama. So because President Trump’s vision of the National Security Council was chaos and mayhem, and a political body masquerading as a defense establishment and policy factory – which it wasn’t,” says Nance. “It was almost like a Russian politburo, and that’s why with the outrage that occurred when the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and other senior military and intelligence officials were taken off the National Security Council. Steve Bannon certainly did de-operationalize it. It took away all of the operations of government that would be necessary to create policy to defend us. That balance has been restored now.”
