NEWSONE NOW: PROTEST CONTINUES IN SUPPORT OF FLORIDA ATTORNEY ARAMIS AYALA

Guest Host Monique Pressley Speaks With Color of Change Executive Director Rashad Robinson about Ayala’s decision to not pursue the death penalty in a federal court case

WASHINGTON, D.C. APRIL 3, 2017 This morning on NewsOne Now, Guest Host Monique Pressley spoke with Color of Change’s Executive Director Rashad Robinson about supporting Florida State Attorney Aramis Ayala, who was removed from a federal court case by Governor Rick Scott for choosing not to pursue the death penalty. Several protestors traveled to the state capitol on buses, several of which were sponsored by Color of Change to protest the decision.

“We actually have to stand up in this situation because this is about taking away black political power,” said Robinson. “Black folks standing up, electing the first black state’s attorney in Florida’s history, and now, the powers that be do not want her to be able to do her job. This is about our ability to be heard, counted, and visible, and we’re going to stand up for Aramis Ayala. That’s part of the Democratic process. We elect people, they do the right thing, and we’ve got to have their back.”

Pressley also spoke with New York State Assemblyman Michael Blake about “Raise The Age,” a bill being debated today by the New York state legislature that, if approved, could end the prosecution of 16- and 17-year-olds as adults no matter what the crime. New York is the one of two states left in the country that has not raised the age of prosecution to 18-year-olds.

“We’ve been very clear that we don’t believe there should be tests as part of if a case should go to criminal court or to family court,” said Blake. “If you’re under 18, it should go to family court, and we should be finding ways to make it easy for that to be the case in the first place. A lot of times when someone is saying, ‘We’re not ready for the case ‘and it’s delaying the case and it’s stopping the clock, we’re saying we need to reject those kind of measures. It should be easier to have a resolution rather than taking longer, and that’s why today is a critical day here in Albany. This is the day on the extender and it will give us more time to raise the age right and we need people to stand with us and stand with speaker Heastie in the assembly so that we do this correctly.”
