CBS NEWS TOPS EDWARD R. MURROW FIELD WITH EIGHT AWARDS FROM THE RADIO, TELEVISION & DIGITAL NEWS ASSOCIATION

Television and Radio Divisions Each Win “Overall Excellence” Titles

“CBS This Morning” Named “Best Newscast”

The Radio, Television & Digital News Association announced today that CBS News won eight Edward R. Murrow awards, the most in this year’s competition. Five of the awards were for television reporting, and three were for CBS Radio News reports. Both the CBS News television and radio divisions won awards for “Overall Excellence” in journalism. The awards will be presented at a gala in New York City on Oct. 9.

CBS THIS MORNING was voted “Best Newscast” in the television division for its domestic and foreign coverage on June 17, 2016. The broadcast was anchored by Charlie Rose, Gayle King and Norah O’Donnell and featured reports from Margaret Brennan, Elizabeth Palmer, Jeff Pegues, Jamie Yuccas, Jonathan Vigliotti, Mark Strassmann and Holly Williams.

CBS THIS MORNING also shared another award for “Investigative Reporting” with the CBS EVENING NEWS for a six-month investigation reported by Jim Axelrod exposing fraud in the rapidly growing and under-regulated genetic testing industry. For the second consecutive year, the “Excellence in Writing” prize went to Steve Hartman’s weekly “On the Road” stories for the CBS EVENING NEWS.

60 MINUTES won the award for “Continuing Coverage” for a Scott Pelley report on the clinical trial of a new and creative treatment for cancer tumors.

CBS Radio News was recognized for “Best Audio Newscast” for the fifth straight year. This time it was for WORLD NEWS ROUNDUP coverage of the Baton Rouge police shooting and the opening day of the Republican National Convention. The broadcast was co-anchored with Peter King in Baton Rouge and Steve Futterman in Cleveland, with Steve Kathan anchoring the historic program from New York. Coverage of the Pulse night club massacre in Orlando earned the staff the “Breaking News” award as well.

Steve Capus is the executive producer of the CBS EVENING NEWS and executive editor of CBS News. Jeff Fager is the executive producer of 60 MINUTES. Ryan Kadro is the executive producer of CBS THIS MORNING, and Craig Swagler is executive producer of CBS Radio News.
