The survivor of a brutal attack reveals what it was like to go face to
face with a cross-country serial killer wanted by the FBI, in an updated
encore of 48 HOURS: “Live to Tell: The Railroad Killer,” to be
broadcast Saturday, Sept. 2 (10:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network. The broadcast coincides with the 20th anniversary of the attack.
The story is set in 1997, when Holly Dunn, then a junior at the
University of Kentucky, wandered away from a party with her boyfriend,
Chris Maier. As they returned from their midnight stroll, a dark figure
holding a sharp object emerged. What they thought would be a robbery
turned horrific when the attacker bound and gagged them. He then beat
Maier to death with a rock and beat Dunn, leaving her for dead.
But Dunn survived, and she would later learn she was the sole survivor
of a multi-state serial killer: Angel Maturino Resendiz. At the time,
Rezendiz was the subject of a huge FBI manhunt and was responsible for
multiple murders in the U.S. and Mexico. He was known as the “Railroad
Killer” because most of the victims were found near train tracks.
Determined not to let her attacker get away with it, Dunn tried to
remember any identifying marks on his body. She wrote a book on the
attack, Sole Survivor: The Inspiring True Story of Coming Face to Face with the Infamous Railroad Killer.
