Patrick Gilhuley, a retired NYPD officer and former bodyguard to stars Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, placed a series of frantic calls to his daughter Jennifer Gilhuley. It was March 3, 2014, and he was at the Mount Olive, N.J. home of his on-again, off-again girlfriend, schoolteacher Virginia Vertetis. Within minutes of those calls, Gilhuley was dead.
Erin Moriarty and 48 HOURS investigate Gilhuley’s death and the murder case against Vertetis in “Moment of Truth” to be broadcast Saturday, Oct. 7 (10:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network.
“I heard three loud shots and I heard him say, ‘Holy [expletive] she’s shooting….’ And the phone call went dead,” Jennifer Gilhuley tearfully told a jury.
When police arrived, Gilhuley’s body was just inside Vertetis’ front door. She told them she used a gun that Gilhuley had left under her mattress. What got Gilhuley and Vertetis to that moment is at the center of the case.
Vertetis’ defense attorney Ed Bilinkas says the shooting was in self-defense. “He choked her,” Bilinkas tells Moriarty. “He looked her straight in the eyes and said he was going to kill her.”
The prosecutor, Matt Troiano, maintains Gilhuley was murdered by Vertetis because her life was falling apart. “And Patrick, the person that …she felt closest to was just up and leaving her,” he says.
What really happened that night? Moriarty and 48 HOURS explore the case through interviews with Bilinkas, Troiano, Vertetis’ mother, Crainie Koellhoffer, Vertetis’ third husband, Jim Faulkner, and forensics expert, Jim Molinaro.
48 HOURS is also in the courtroom as the case plays out, and Moriarty talks with members of the jury who decided Vertetis’ fate. 48 HOURS also deconstructs critical forensic evidence that is a key to the prosecution’s theory of what happened. Will a bullet settle who’s telling the truth?
48 HOURS: “Moment of Truth” is produced by Sarah Prior, Lourdes Aguiar and Alicia Tejada. Doreen Schechter, Marlon Disla and Gary Winter are the editors. Nancy Kramer is the executive story editor. Judy Tygard is the senior producer. Susan Zirinsky is the senior executive producer.
