CONVICTED OF INVOLUNTARILY KILLING HER FIANCÉ WHILE KAYAKING ON THE HUDSON RIVER, ‘20/20’ FEATURES INTERVIEW WITH ANGELIKA GRASWALD AFTER BEING RELEASED FROM PRISON
‘20/20’ Airs on the West Coast, Saturday, March 3 (10:00–11:00 p.m. PST), on ABC
What began as an apparently loving couple on a kayaking trip across the Hudson River in New York State ended in tragedy when Vince Viafore drowned in the frigid water. His Latvian fiancée, Angelika Graswald, survived and was convicted of involuntarily killing her fiancé. “20/20” revisits the case that made headlines nationwide. Anchor Elizabeth Vargas sits down with Angelika after she was released from prison. Angelika – the only person alive who knows what really happened that day – talks about the death of her fiancé and what life is like now that she is free again. “20/20” airs only on the West Coast, Saturday, March 3 (10:00–11:00 p.m. PST), on ABC. (Rebroadcast. OAD: 2/16/18)
After Vince’s death, Angelika claimed that his kayak filled with water and sank. Police accused Angelika, who admitted she was unhappy in her relationship, of causing his death by removing the kayak’s drain plug and the paddle’s connector ring. Charged with murder in the second degree and manslaughter in the second degree and facing a possible life sentence, she proclaimed her innocence. After pleading guilty to a lesser charge of criminally negligent homicide, Angelika was released from prison after serving a little more than two and a half years. The hour includes footage of Angelika the day she was released from prison, her 9-1-1 call and interrogation tape, and interviews with Richard Portale, Angelika’s defense attorney; Mary Ann Viafore, Vince’s mother; and Todd Wright, a kayak expert who goes back to the Hudson River where the mysterious tragedy occurred.
“20/20” is anchored by Elizabeth Vargas and David Muir. David Sloan is senior executive producer.
