ABC’s ‘Station 19’ Tops Its Week-Ago Debut and Moves Up to No. 1 at 9 p.m.

ABC Thursday Prime (8:00-11:00 p.m. – 5.5 million and 1.2/5 in AD18-49):
ABC’s TGIT lineup ran a strong 2nd to CBS with the return of “The Big Bang Theory,” leading off its night in Adults 18-49 (1.2/5 vs. 1.4/6) while outdelivering NBC by 50% (0.8/3) and Fox by 71% (0.7/3). With strong delayed viewing for its Thursday dramas, ABC is projected to straight out win the night once Live + 7 Day Adult 18-49 ratings become available

  • At 8:00 p.m., ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy” finished a solid 2nd in the hour in Adults 18-49 (1.7/8) against CBS’ comedy combo (“The Big Bang Theory”/”Young Sheldon”) and won the hour by 20% in Adults 18-34 to rank as Thursday’s No. 1 TV show in the younger demo.

                       

  • With above average retention of “Grey’s” at 9:00 p.m., ABC’s “Station 19” ranked No. 1 in its hour in Adults 18-49 (1.2/5-tie) and grew from its week-ago 2-hour series debut by 7% in Total Viewers and by 9% in Adults 18-49, drawing the Net’s largest series audience (5.8 million) to the time period in 6 months – since season premiere Thursday on 9/28/18. ABC’s “Station 19” beat out NBC’s “Chicago Fire” on the night(5.3 million and 0.9/4 from 10:00-11:00 p.m.) by 11% in viewers and by 33% in young adults.

    • In the Live + 3 Day ratings, ABC’s debut episode of “Station 19” saw its audience climb to 8.0 million viewers in L+3 (from 5.4 million in L+SD) and its Adult 18-49 number jump to 1.8/7 (from 1.1/5), marking gains of +2.6 million and +0.7 rating points over its L+SD numbers.



  • At 10:00 p.m., ABC’s “Scandal” shifted up into the 1-hour-later time slot to come within 1-tenth of the No. 1 position in Adults 18-49 (0.8/3), rank No. 1 in Adults 18-34 (tie) and win its new slot in key Women (W18-34/W18-49).

“Alex, Inc.” (8:30-9:00 p.m. – 4.6 million and 1.1/5 in AD18-49): 
Despite debuting against the 2nd half-hours of Fox’s “Empire” return and NBC’s “The Voice” special at 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, ABC’s “Alex, Inc.” delivered improved audience retention of its “The Goldbergs” lead-in week to week in Total Viewers (85% vs. 81%) and Adults 18-49 (79% vs. 75%). In fact with Total Viewers, “Alex, Inc.” delivered season-best retention for ABC in the half-hour.
  • The new ABC comedy opened on par with the week-earlier 9-week highs posted by the season finale of “Speechless” in the slot with Total Viewers (4.6 million) and Adults 18-49 (1.1/5 vs. 1.2/5). In addition, “Alex, Inc.” improved the half-hour by 13% in Women 18-34 from the week-earlier “Speechless” closer and posted ABC’s highest rating to the slot in more than 2 months – since 1/24/18.

Driven by an impressive premiere for “Roseanne” leading to improvement across the night, ABC more than doubled its nearest Tuesday competition in Adults 18-49 (+155% – 2.8/11 vs. 1.1/5 – CBS and NBC tied). ABC aired the Top 3 shows of the night with young adults. ABC posted its strongest Tuesday with series programming in 4½ years – since 9/24/13.

  • Towering over NBC’s “The Voice” and CBS’ “NCIS” in the 8:00-9:00 p.m. hour to rank as Tuesday’s No. 1 TV show, ABC’s 1-hour premiere of “Roseanne” opened with an average audience of 18.2 million viewers and a 5.1/21 in Adults 18-49, building from its first half-hour to its second half-hour.
    • “Roseanne” scored Tuesday’s top-rated entertainment telecast in 6 years with young adults – since 2/28/12.
    • “Roseanne” opened with TV’s highest Adult 18-49 rating for any comedy telecast on any night in 3½ years – since CBS’ “The Big Bang Theory” season opener on 9/22/14.
    • “Roseanne” delivered ABC’s best results in the 1-hour time period since November 2006 in viewers and since November 2009 in young adults – since 11/14/06 and 11/3/09, respectively.
    • “Roseanne’s” return built on its May 1997 finale telecast 21 years ago by 10% in Total Viewers (18.2 million vs. 16.6 million on 5/20/97), outdrawing its final 12 telecasts that season.
    • In viewers and young adults, “Roseanne” stands as the season’s strongest premiere as well as the No. 1 regularly scheduled scripted telecast this season.



  • Dominating its slot with new season highs at 9:00 p.m., “black-ish” built for the 2nd consecutive week, shooting up by 123% in Total Viewers (8.7 million vs. 3.9 million) and by 136% in Adults 18-49 (2.6/10 vs. 1.1/4). ABC’s “black-ish” drew its 2nd largest audience ever (behind only its series debut on 9/24/14) and its best young adult performance since November 2014 (since 11/19/14).

  • Winning the 9:30 p.m. half-hour, ABC’s debut of “Splitting Up Together” more than doubled the year-ago midseason premiere in the slot of “Imaginary Mary” (on 4/4/17) with Total Viewers (+106% – 7.2 million vs. 3.5 million) and Adults 18-49 (+144% – 2.2/8 vs. 0.9/3), attracting the Net’s best series numbers to the half-hour since 2013 – since 5/21/13 and 9/24/13, respectively. In addition, “Splitting Up Together” stood as ABC’s best Tuesday comedy debut since September 2015 – since 9/22/15 with “The Muppets.”



  • At 10:00 p.m., ABC’s “For The People” spiked week to week by 33% in Total Viewers (3.6 million vs. 2.7 million) and by 50% in Adults 18-49 (0.9/4 vs. 0.6/3), marking new series highs.

Year to Year and Week to Week, ‘The View’ Posts Increases in Total Viewers and Women 18-49

Season to Date, ‘The View’ Is Posting Gains in Total Viewers, 
Marking Its Most Watched Season in 4 Years
and Is Delivering Its Largest Season Leads Over ‘The Talk’ in Total Viewers and Women 25-54 in 5 Years 

ABC’s “The View” averaged 2.860 million Total Viewers, 467,000 Women 25-54 and 336,000 Women 18-49, during the week of March 19, 2018, based on Live + Same Day Data from Nielsen Media Research. “The View” beat CBS’ “The Talk” (2.580 million, 405,000 and 272,000, respectively) during the week in Total Viewers (+280,000), Women 25-54 (+62,000) and Women 18-49 (+64,000).

“The View” posted increases year to year in Total Viewers (+7% – 2.860 million vs. 2.667 million) and Women 18-49 (+5% – 336,000 vs. 319,000).

“The View” improved over the previous week in Total Viewers (+1% – 2.860 million vs. 2.837 million) and Women 18-49 (+2% – 336,000 vs. 331,000).

“The View” widened its advantages over “The Talk” week to week in Total Viewers (+17% – 280,000 vs. 239,000), Women 25-54 (+265% – 62,000 vs. 17,000) and Women 18-49 (+129% – 64,000 vs. 28,000).

“The View” increased its lead over “The Talk” year to year in Total Viewers (+48% – 280,000 vs. 189,000), Women 25-54 (+41% – 62,000 vs. 44,000) and Women 18-49 (+113% – 64,000 vs. 30,000).

Season to date, “The View” is posting gains compared to the same point last season in Total Viewers (+1% – 2.960 million vs. 2.917 million), marking its most watched season in 4 years – since the 2013-14 season. 

In addition, “The View” leads CBS’ “The Talk” across the board, increasing its advantages from the same point last season in Total Viewers (352,000 vs. 179,000), Women 25-54 (103,000 vs. 60,000) and Women 18-49 (70,000 vs. 65,000). In fact, “The View” is posting its largest season leads over the CBS program in Total Viewers and Women 25-54 in 5 years – since the 2012-13 season.

‘Nightline’ Improves Year Over Year in All Key Measures for the 2nd Straight Week

‘Nightline’ Beats CBS’ ‘The Late Late Show with James Corden’ Across the Board

‘Nightline’ Runs Neck and Neck with NBC’s ‘Late Night with Seth Meyers’ Coming Within 7,000 Overall Viewers

Season to Date, ‘Nightline’ Leads CBS’ ‘The Late Late Show with James Corden’ in Total Viewers, Adults 25-54 and Adults 18-49

ABC News’ “Nightline” averaged 1.384 million Total Viewers, 517,000 Adults 25-54 and 385,000 Adults 18-49, during the week of March 19, 2018, based on Live + Same Day Data from Nielsen Media Research. “Nightline” defeated CBS’ “The Late Late Show with James Corden” (1.221 million, 423,000 and 333,000, respectively) in Total Viewers (+163,000), Adults 25-54 (+94,000) and Adults 18-49 (+52,000).

“Nightline” finished neck and neck in Total Viewers with NBC’s “Late Night with Seth Meyers” during the week as only 7,000 overall viewers separated the two programs (1.384 million vs. 1.391 million).   

For the 2nd week in a row, “Nightline” improved year to year (1.338 million, 486,000 and 380,000, respectively, for w/o 3/20/17) in all key target measures: Total Viewers (+3%), Adults 25-54 (+6%) and Adults 18-49 (+1%).

Season to date, “Nightline” is beating CBS’ “The Late Late Show with James Corden” across the board: Total Viewers (+8,000 – 1.423 million vs. 1.415 million), Adults 25-54 (+25,000 – 522,000 vs. 497,000) and Adults 18-49 (+27,000 – 396,000 vs. 369,000). 

Stories on "Nightline" last week included a report from Saudi Arabia about the country’s changing social restrictions giving women more rights; a return visit to Puerto Rico where families are still without power and struggling to rebuild six months after Hurricane Maria; a breakdown of the video and reaction to the shooting of an unarmed 22-year-old black man shot multiple times in the backyard of his grandmother’s house in Sacramento; and interviews with the cast of “Roseanne,” actress Bella Thorne and the Oscar®-winning songwriters and cast of the Broadway adaptation of “Frozen.”

NOTE: CBS’ “The Late Late Show” was delayed on Thursday (3/22/18) and Friday (3/23/18), and each telecast was retitled due to NCAA basketball; ratings for both days are excluded from the averages. “The Late Late Show”’s averages are based on 3 days (Monday–Wednesday), while “Nightline” and “Late Night with Seth Meyers” are based on 5 days.

‘The Good Doctor’ Closes as ABC’s Most Watched Freshman Series in 13 Years

ABC Monday Prime (8:00-11:00 p.m. – 8.2 million and 1.6/7 in AD18-49):
With “American Idol” and “The Good Doctor” season finale, ABC came within 1-tenth of tying “The Voice”-led NBC on Monday night in Adults 18-49 (1.6/7 vs. 1.7/7) and moved ahead of NBC at 10:00 p.m. to dominate the hour with “The Good Doctor” finishing as Monday’s No. 1 scripted show. ABC’s “American Idol” and “The Good Doctor” tied as Monday’s No. 2 TV show in Adults 18-49, trailing only “The Voice.” The Network won the night in Adults 18-34 with “Idol” and “Good Doctor” tying as the night’s No. 1 show. 

“American Idol” (8:00-10:00 p.m. – 7.7 million and 1.6/6 in AD18-49):
Opposite NBC’s “The Voice” from 8:00-10:00 p.m., ABC’s “American Idol” held even week to week with Total Viewers (7.7 million) and Adults 18-49 (1.6/6). “The Voice” was down on both counts from the prior week, with a season low in young adults. ABC’s “Idol” beat NBC’s “The Voice”in the 2-hour time slot to rank as Monday’s No. 1 TV show with Adults 18-34 (tied w/”The Good Doctor”), Men 18-34, Women 18-34 and Teens 12-17.

“The Good Doctor” (10:00-11:00 p.m. – 9.4 million and 1.6/7 in AD18-49):
At 10:00 p.m., “The Good Doctor” drove ABC up into 1st place by a 60% advantage over runner-up NBC’s “Good Girls” in Adults 18-49 (1.6/7 vs. 1.0/4). “The Good Doctor” also ranked as the most watched TV show overall in the hour (9.4 million). The ABC drama rose 4% week to week in Total Viewers and held even with Adults 18-49.

  • Averaging 15.4 million viewers during its first season, “The Good Doctor” closed out as ABC’s most watched freshman series in 13 years– since “Lost” in the 2004-05 season.

“American Idol” (8:00-10:00 p.m. – 7.4 million and 1.7/6 in AD18-49):
Jumping over its lead-in by 89% at 8:00 p.m. against an NCAA Basketball overrun/Stormy Daniels-fueled CBS and building from its first to second hour, ABC’s “American Idol” held steady with its week-ago telecast in Adults 18-49 (1.7/6 vs. 1.8/6). For the 3rd time in as many weeks, “American Idol” delivered triple-digit improvement for ABC to the 2-hour time period year to year, vaulting over the year-ago night with “Once Upon a Time” and “Time After Time” by 208% in Total Viewers (7.4 million vs. 2.4 million) and by 143% in Adults 18-49 (1.7/6 vs. 0.7/2).

  • Despite CBS’ decided lead-in advantage at 8:00 p.m. from the highly rated “60 Minutes,” ABC’s “American Idol” overcame CBS’ dramas (“Instinct”/”NCIS: LA”), NBC’s unscripted series (“Little Big Shots”/”Genius Junior”) and Fox’s encore OJ Simpson documentary to rank No. 1 from 8:00-10:00 p.m. across broadcast in all key Women demos (W18-34/W18-49/W25-54) and among Teens 12-17



  • On top of its solid Live + Same Day numbers, ABC’s “American Idol” is seeing substantial lifts in Live +3 Day with last Sunday’s telecast rising to 9.2 million viewers (+18% from 7.8 million) and a 2.2/8 in Adults 18-49 (+22% from a 1.8/6).

“Deception” (10:00-11:00 p.m. – 4.0 million and 0.8/3 in AD18-49):
In the 10 o’clock hour, ABC’s “Deception” held even with its week-ago National rating (0.8/3), which adjusted down 1-tenth from its Fast Affiliate number. ABC’s “Deception” beat NBC’s “Timeless” in the hour by 33% with young adults (0.8/3 vs. 0.6/3). “Deception” more than doubled its hour for ABC from the same night last year with “American Crime” in Total Viewers (+150% – 4.0 million vs. 1.6 million) and Adults 18-49 (+167% – 0.8/3 vs. 0.3/1).

Up against CBS’ primetime NCAA Basketball Tournament coverage, ABC’s TGIT lineup stood as the top choice in entertainment programming for the 2nd Thursday in a row with Adults 18-49 (1.4/5), beating NBC by 27% (1.1/5) and more than doubling Fox (+133% – 0.6/3). Boosted by “Grey’s” and the debut of “Station 19,” ABC’s Thursday improved over the prior week by 17% in viewers and by 8% in young adults, which included the season finale of “HTGAWM.”
                                                               

  • At 8:00 p.m., ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy” ranked as Thursday’s No. 1 TV series for the 2nd week in a row with Total Viewers (7.5 million) and Adults 18-49 (1.9/8). “Grey’s” also grew for the 2nd consecutive week in both viewers (+4%) and young adults (+6%).

  • From 9:00-11:00 p.m., despite facing increasing numbers from CBS’ NCAA Basketball Tournament and 2 hours of NBC’s veteran “Chicago Fire,” ABC’s debut of “Station 19” delivered ABC’s largest series audience (5.4 million) to the 2-hour time period in 6 months – since 9/28/17. Among Adults 18-49, “Station 19” nearly caught “Chicago Fire” in the 2-hour slot (1.1/5 vs. 1.2/4) and beat the NBC drama by 14% with Adults 18-34 (0.8/4 vs. 0.7/4).

ABC’s ‘Designated Survivor’ Rises to Its Most Watched Telecast of 2018

ABC Wednesday Prime (8:00-11:00 p.m. – 4.8 million and 1.2/5 in AD18-49):
ABC saw all five of its Wednesday series add viewers over their most recent originals, while the season finale of “Speechless” closed out on a high note with a 44% spike in Adults 18-49 and year-to-year growth. ABC ranked No. 2 on the night in Adults 18-49 (1.2/5 – 3-way tie), just 1-tenth behind Fox with the season finale of “9-1-1” (1.3/5). 
                                        

  • At 8:00 p.m., “The Goldbergs” came back from its week-ago preemption with a gain in Total Viewers (+4% – 5.8 million vs. 5.6 million) and held even with Adults 18-49 (1.5/7). 

  • At 8:30 p.m., ABC’s season finale of “Speechless” grew by strong double digits week to week in viewers (+31% – 4.6 million vs. 3.5 million) and young adults (+44% – 1.3/5 vs. 0.9/4), scoring 9-week highson both measures – since 1/17/18. “Speechless” topped its year-ago May finale by 2% in viewers and by 8% in young adults (4.5 million and 1.2/5 on 5/17/17).



  • At 9:00 p.m., ABC’s “Modern Family” improved over its last original two weeks ago by 8% in Total Viewers (5.6 million vs. 5.2 million) and 14% in Adults 18-49 (1.6/6 vs. 1.4/5).  

  • In the 9:30 p.m. half-hour, ABC’s “American Housewife” grew by 21% over the prior week in viewers (4.5 million vs. 3.7 million) and by 30% in young adults (1.3/5 vs. 1.0/4), marking its best results in the slot in over 2 months – since 1/17/18.



  • In the 10 o’clock hour, ABC’s “Designated Survivor” built week to week by 8% in Total Viewers (4.0 million vs. 3.7 million) and held even in Adults 18-49 (0.7/3), drawing its most watched telecast of 2018. ABC’s “Designated Survivor” remains the season’s No. 1 broadcast series in delayed viewing, as the ABC sophomore drama shoots up +113% in Total Viewers and +125% in Adults 18-49 from L+SD to L+7.

Season to Date, ‘The View’ Is Posting Gains in Total Viewers, 
Marking Its Most Watched Season in 3 Years
and Is Delivering Its Largest Season Leads Over ‘The Talk’ in Total Viewers and Women 25-54 in 5 Years
ABC’s “The View” averaged 2.837 million Total Viewers, 476,000 Women 25-54 and 331,000 Women 18-49, during the week of March 12, 2018, based on Live + Same Day Data from Nielsen Media Research. “The View” beat CBS’ “The Talk” (2.598 million, 459,000 and 303,000, respectively) during the week in Total Viewers (+239,000), Women 25-54 (+17,000) and Women 18-49 (+28,000).
“The View” increased its lead over “The Talk” year to year in Women 18-49 (28,000 vs. 21,000).
Season to date, “The View” is posting gains compared to the same point last season in Total Viewers (+1% – 2.962 million vs. 2.929 million), marking its most watched season in 3 years – since the 2014-15 season. 
In addition, “The View” leads CBS’ “The Talk” across the board, increasing its advantages from the same point last season in Total Viewers (355,000 vs. 183,000), Women 25-54 (104,000 vs. 61,000) and Women 18-49 (71,000 vs. 66,000). In fact, “The View” is posting its largest season leads over the CBS program in Total Viewers and Women 25-54 in 5 years – since the 2012-13 season.
NOTE: CBS’ “The Talk” was preempted on Thu 3/15/18 and Fri 3/16/18 due to NCAA basketball. “The Talk’s” averages are based on 3 days (Monday–Wednesday).
