A dog may be man's best friend, but a cartoon fan's best friend is Droopy, the diminutive basset hound created by animation legend Tex Avery. No matter the challenge, deadpan Droopy remains unflappable. Yes, there are jowly folds, but no flaps. Not ever. Droopy speaks slowly but thinks fast. He moves slowly but pops up quicker than a dog can lick a dinner dish, anywhere he needs to be.
He's the ideal counterpoint to Avery's trendsetting sight gags, extended reactions and hilarious unpredictability. All 24 of the theatrical Droopy cartoons - with The Wolf and bulldog Spike joining the fun - are showcased in this one-of-a-kind 2-disc Collector's Set. You'll be happier than a flea in a doghouse!
Like many cartoon shorts first seen in theaters,
Droopy became a small-screen mainstay as the television medium spread into most households. In the case of
Droopy, his cartoons were seen on TV mostly as part of the mid-60s show
Tom and Jerry. Then, in 2007 (hard to believe that's 11 years ago now!) the folks at Warner Home Video released
Tex Avery's Droopy: The Complete Theatrical Collection on DVD, collecting every one of the basset's cartoons together. However, that release has gone out of print, and used copies can go for well over a hundred dollars.
But there's no need to pay that kind of highway robbery any more! The Warner Archive Collection has announced that they are re-releasing
Tex Avery's Droopy: The Complete Theatrical Collection as a manufacture on demand (MOD) title, becoming available again on
April 10th. And it's much more affordable than the used copies, at just $24.99 SRP for this two disc set. As you can see below, the box cover art is the same (as are all on-disc contents). You can pre-order it now from the WBshop online studio store, or wait until Amazon starts taking pre-orders at their entry:
