ABC Wins Sunday by 71% With a Rising ‘American Idol’ as the No. 1 TV Show
‘Idol’ Grows by Double Digits Week to Week and Produces Huge Time Slot Gains
‘Deception’ Ranks No. 1 at 10 p.m. and Doubles Its Hour for ABC Year to Year
ABC Sunday Prime Time (7:00-11:00 p.m. – 5.9 million and 1.2/5 in AD18-49):
With “American Idol” finishing as the night’s No. 1 TV show, ABC dominated Sunday by 71% over its nearest competition with Adults 18-49 (1.2/5 vs. 0.7/3 – CBS and Fox tied).
“American Idol” (8:00-10:00 p.m. – 7.4 million and 1.5/6 in AD18-49):
Spiking over its lead-in at 8:00 p.m. (+1.8 million/+50%), ABC’s “American Idol” won its 2-hour slot and grew by double digits week to week with Total Viewers (+16% – 7.4 million vs. 6.4 million) and Adults 18-49 (+15% – 1.5/6 vs. 1.3/5). The ABC unscripted series drew its biggest audience in 3 weeks – since 4/1/18.
For its 7th straight telecast on the night, “Idol” improved its 2-hour time period by huge margins, rising over the year-ago night with “Once Upon a Time” and “Match Game” by 155% in Total Viewers (7.4 million vs. 2.9 million) and by 88% in Adults 18-49 (1.5/6 vs. 0.8/3). On average season to date, “American Idol” generates ABC’s best numbers in the 2-hour time period in 4 years in Total Viewers and in 3 years among Adults 18-49 – since the comparable weeks of 2014 and 2015, respectively.
“Deception” (10:00-11:00 p.m. – 3.4 million and 0.6/3 in AD18-49):
In the 10 o’clock hour, ABC’s “Deception” came back from the prior week’s preemption to rank No. 1 in Adults 18-49 (0.6/3), tying CBS’ “Madam Secretary” (0.6/2) and beating NBC’s “Timeless” by 20% (0.5/2). The new ABC drama held steady with its last telecast 2 weeks ago (0.6/3 vs. 0.7/3).
“Deception” improved its time slot for ABC by impressive margins from the year-ago night with “American Crime,” growing the hour by 89% in Total Viewers (3.4 million vs. 1.8 million) and doubling it among Adults 18-49 (+100% – 0.6/3 vs. 0.3/1).
