An all new episode of “Food Exposed with Nelufar Hedayat” will air Tuesday, April 17th at 8:00 pm ET/PT on FUSION. Water rights are a universal issue and even some in the U.S. are fighting for regular access to clean, safe drinking water. Companies are racing to secure ownership of natural water resources around the world, whether for infrastructure, agriculture or even to sell as bottled water. Yet, close to home, communities are finding themselves without any tap water to drink, while the urban trend for fashionable bottled water brands in the U.S. only grows. In “Water,” Nelufar explores the fundamental question: who has the right to water?
Nelufar’s journey begins in California, where she visits with the Winnemem Wintu, a native tribe nestled in the foothills of the iconic Mount Shasta. Water is at the heart of the tribe’s cultural and religious practice, yet Chief Caleen Sisk reveals how water-diversion schemes by big business and government are threatening their homes, food and very way of life. Next, Nelufar meets Hollywood legend, James Cromwell, who has just been on trial for his activism about water, and he shows her the side effects of a new power plant on reservoirs providing water to New York City. Further from home, a booming agriculture industry is thriving in the middle of the Peruvian desert, but it is draining the region dry and tensions are at boiling point. Here, agribusinesses are threatening the livelihoods of some of the world’s most vulnerable people to cater to the West’s year-round demand for thirsty crops such as asparagus, pomegranates and grapes.
