Just last week, 72-year-old Joseph DeAngelo, the suspected Golden State Killer, was arrested and charged with eight counts of first-degree murder decades after his alleged reign of terror. Authorities believe that throughout the 1970s and 1980s the former police officer was responsible for 12 murders, at least 50 rapes and multiple home burglaries throughout California. On “20/20,” ABC News correspondent Whit Johnson explores DeAngelo’s background, questions how the Golden State Killer was able to elude authorities for so long and reports on how the suspect was finally tracked down using DNA through a genealogy website. The hour also features interviews with Golden State Killer attack survivors Jane Carson-Sandler and Margaret Wardlow, who was attacked at age 13. “20/20” airs on Friday, May 4 (10:01 – 11:00 p.m. EDT), on ABC.
“20/20” features an interview with investigator Paul Holes, who claims to have uploaded DNA information to the genetic genealogy website GEDmatch that cracked the case. It had been obtained from a duplicate rape kit collected at the Charlene Smith crime scene and kept in a freezer for 38 years. Additional interviews include Jennifer Carole, whose father, Lyman Smith, and stepmother, Charlene, were murder victims of the Golden State Killer; Michael Bowker, a magazine writer who was briefly a suspect before being cleared by authorities; William and Joan Oakley, neighbors of Golden State Killer murder victims Dr. Robert Offerman and Debra Manning; Carol Daly, an original investigator on the case; retired Auburn Police chief Nick Willick, who was DeAngelo’s former boss; and Farrel Ward who worked with DeAngelo in the Exeter Police Department.
“20/20” is anchored by Elizabeth Vargas and David Muir. David Sloan is senior executive producer.
