ABC’s “The View” averaged 2.596 million Total Viewers, 414,000 Women 25-54 and 285,000 Women 18-49, during the week of May 21, 2018, based on Live + Same Day Data from Nielsen Media Research. “The View” beat CBS’ “The Talk” (2.252 million, 399,000  and 276,000, respectively) during the week in Total Viewers (+344,000), Women 25-54 (+15,000) and Women 18-49 (+9,000).  “The View” increased its Total Viewer lead versus the “The Talk” both week to week (vs. +326,000 for w/o 5/14/18) and year to year (vs. +13,000 for w/o 5/22/17).
For the 7th week in a row, “The View” was up on the same week last year (w/o 5/22/17) in Total Viewers (+1% – 2.596 million vs. 2.558 million).  
Season to date, “The View” is posting gains compared to the same point last season in Total Viewers (+1% – 2.901 million vs. 2.861 million), marking its most-watched season in 4 years – since the 2013-2014 season. 
In addition, “The View” leads CBS’ “The Talk” across the board, increasing its advantages from the same point last season in Total Viewers (352,000 vs. 173,000), Women 25-54 (86,000 vs. 58,000) and Women 18-49 (59,000 vs. 54,000). In fact, “The View” is posting its largest season leads over the CBS program in Total Viewers and Women 25-54 in 5 years – since the 2012-2013 season.

‘Nightline’ Beats CBS’ ‘The Late Late Show with James Corden’ in Total Viewers and Adults 18-49

Season to Date, ‘Nightline’ Leads CBS’ ‘The Late Late Show with James Corden’ in Total Viewers, Adults 25-54 and Adults 18-49

ABC News’ “Nightline” averaged 1.225 million Total Viewers, 407,000 Adults 25-54 and 309,000 Adults 18-49, during the week of May 21, 2018, based on Live + Same Day Data from Nielsen Media Research. “Nightline” defeated CBS’ “The Late Late Show with James Corden” (1.158 million and 275,000, respectively) in Total Viewers (+67,000) and Adults 18-49 (+34,000).

“Nightline” improved on the previous week (1.171 million, 393,000 and 407,000, respectively, for w/o 3/26/18) in Total Viewers (+5%), Adults 25-54 (+4%) and Adults 18-49 (+6%).

“Nightline” narrowed its week-to-week margins with NBC’s “Late Night with Seth Meyers” in Total Viewers (-8% – 102,000 vs. 111,000), Adults 25-54 (-8% – 99,000 vs. 108,000) and Adults 18-49 (-9% – 68,000 vs. 75,000). 

Season to date, “Nightline” is beating CBS’ “The Late Late Show with James Corden” across the board: Total Viewers (+9,000 – 1.393 million vs. 1.384 million), Adults 25-54 (+31,000 – 508,000 vs. 477,000) and Adults 18-49 (+29,000 – 383,000 vs. 354,000). 

Stories on “Nightline” last week included a look at the released video of police tasing Milwaukee Bucks rookie Sterling Brown; interviews with survivors of the Texas school shooting; a report on the reactions to the NFL’s new anthem policy for players and personnel on the field; a profile on 9 year-old social media star Lil Tay; and interviews with cast members from “Dear White People” and “Solo: A Star Wars Story.”

NOTE: On Friday (5/25/18), CBS’ “The Late Late Show with James Corden” was retitled to “The Late Late Show – JC-ENC.” The telecast is excluded from the weekly averages. CBS’ averages are based on four days (Monday – Thursday).

ABC News’ “Nightline” is anchored by Dan Harris, Juju Chang and Byron Pitts. Steven Baker is executive producer. The program airs weeknights, from 12:35-1:05 a.m. EDT, on The ABC Television Network. Together with “Jimmy Kimmel Live!,” “Nightline” is part of ABC’s winning late-night strategy of airing news and entertainment programming.

ABC’s ‘The Bachelorette’ Opens as Monday’s Most-Watched Broadcast Show


ABC Monday Prime Time (8:00-11:00 p.m. – 4.6 million and 1.1/4 in AD18-49):
Up against the opening game of the NHL Stanley Cup Finals during prime time on Memorial Day, ABC took the entertainment lead on Monday with Adults 18-49, more than doubling Fox with its 2-hour “Lucifer” special (+120% – 1.1/4 vs. 0.5/2). The Net straight out won the night across all key Women demos (W18-34/W18-49/W25-54).

“The Bachelorette” (8:00-10:00 p.m. – 5.6 million and 1.4/5 in AD18-49):
Opposite stiff competition from 8:00-10:00 p.m. against the Stanley Cup, ABC’s premiere of “The Bachelorette” finished as Monday’s most-watched broadcast show overall (5.6 million) and qualified as the night’s No. 1 non-sports show in Adults 18-49 (1.4/5). “The Bachelorette” held steady with its year-ago Memorial Day telecast in Total Viewers (5.6 million vs. 5.7 million) and Adults 18-49 (1.4/5 vs. 1.5/6) and was on par with last season’s premiere coming out of the “Dancing” finale on the final Monday of the season (5.7 million and 1.8/6 on 5/22/17).

Editors, please note:  ABC’sThe Bachelorette” typically premieres the week prior to Memorial Day, coming out of the “Dancing with the Stars” finale at the end of the broadcast season. Since becoming a summer series in 2008, it has only premiered one time on Memorial Day in 2013.

· ABC Posts Its Most Competitive Season in 10 Years: Based on all programming, ABC moved up to rank No. 2 for the 2017-18 season in Adults 18-49 (1.5/6-tie), climbing from No. 4 the prior season. To make this happen, ABC rallied as the No. 1 network on average from the conclusion of the Olympics in February through the end of the season in May. By finishing No. 2 during 2017-18, ABC posted its most competitive season in 10 years - since tying for No. 2 during the 2007-08 season.

· Season's Highest-Rated TV Series: The Net delivered 7 of the Top 20 entertainment series on broadcast TV this season in Adults 18-49, landing 3 in the Top 5, including the No. 1 comedy with "Roseanne" and the No. 1 new drama with "The Good Doctor": "Roseanne" (5.0 rating) - No. 2, "The Good Doctor" (3.4 rating) - No. 4, "Grey's Anatomy" (3.3 rating) - No. 5, "The Bachelor" (2.4 rating) - No. 11, "Modern Family" (2.3 rating) - No. 12, while "American Idol-SUN" (2.1 rating) and "Scandal" (2.1 rating) tie at No. 17. ABC freshman "The Good Doctor" was the season's No. 1 new drama, as well as the No. 1 10 o'clock TV series in both viewers and young adults. It was also the No. 1 freshman series in Adults 18-49, moving past CBS' "Young Sheldon."

· ABC Leads the Season's Comedy Rankings: With "Roseanne" emerging to lead the pack, ABC claimed 5 of the season's Top 10 comedies - the most for any net: "Roseanne" (5.0 rating) - No. 1, "Modern Family" (2.3 rating) - No. 5, "The Middle" (1.9 rating) - No. 7, "Splitting Up Together" (1.8 rating) and "The Goldbergs" (1.8 rating) tie at No. 9.

· Shows Improving Time Periods: In Adults 18-49, ABC's "The Good Doctor" (+162%), "Roseanne" (+213%), "black-ish" (+13%), "Splitting Up Together" (+64%) and "American Idol-SUN" (+91%) each improved their respective time periods by strong margins year to year. In addition, ABC's primetime delivery was up this season on both Monday (+5%) and Sunday (+7%) nights.
· TV's Top 3-Hour Drama Block with Young Adults: Opposite CBS' and NBC's Thursday Night Football, ABC's Thursday drama lineup dominated its entertainment competition on the night and ranked as the No. 1 three-hour drama block on TV with young adults (2.4/10), out of 5 blocks total.
· ABC Series Among Most Popularly Recorded and Played Back: On average during prime time, ABC's numbers for original programming jumped from the first-reported Live + Same Day averages to the finalized Live + 7 Day ratings by 40% in Total Viewers (4.8 million to 6.7 million) and by 55% in Adults 18-49 (1.1/4 to 1.7/7), qualifying as the biggest gainer on the major nets among young adults. ABC's series remained the most popular in TV playback this season, as it delivered 5 of the Top 10 biggest broadcast gainers among Adults 18-49 and the Top 2 gainers in Total Viewers with "Roseanne" and "The Good Doctor." A total of 11 ABC series added 2 million viewers or more from their initially reported totals via time-shifted viewing: "Roseanne" (+7.1 million), "The Good Doctor" (+6.9 million), "Designated Survivor" (+4.5 million), "Grey's Anatomy" (+3.6 million), "Modern Family" (+3.2 million), "How to Get Away with Murder" (+2.7 million), "Station 19" (+2.6 million), "Scandal" (+2.6 million), "The Crossing" (+2.5 million), "For The People" (+2.1 million) and "Deception" (+2.1 million). Among Adults 18-49, 6 of ABC's series registered substantial ratings increases of at least 1.0 rating point: "Roseanne" (+2.4 rating), "The Good Doctor" (+1.8 rating), "Grey's Anatomy" (+1.5 rating), "Modern Family" (+1.3 rating), "HTGAWM" (+1.1 rating) and "Scandal" (+1.0 rating). In addition for the first time ever, 5 of ABC's series delivered triple-digit percentage increases among Adults 18-49: "S.H.I.E.L.D." (+140%), "Designated Survivor" (+129%), "HTGAWM" (+122%), "The Good Doctor" (+100%) and "Inhumans" (+100%).

ABC’s “The View” delivered 2.751 million Total Viewers, 445,000 Women 25-54 and 307,000 Women 18-49 during the May 2018 Sweep, based on Most Current Data from Nielsen Media Research. “The View” delivered an across-the-board victory over CBS’ “The Talk” (2.330 million, 400,000 and 276,000, respectively) during the sweep: Total Viewers (+421,000), Women 25-54 (+45,000) and Women 18-49 (+31,000).

“The View” turned in its largest May sweep margins over the CBS program in 4 years in both Total Viewers and Women 18-49 – since May 2014.

For the 2nd sweep in a row, “The View” saw gains on the year-ago sweep (May 2017) in Total Viewers (+2% – 2.751 million vs. 2.701 million).

ABC News’ “Nightline” drew 1.252 million Total Viewers, 435,000 Adults 25-54 and 321,000 Adults 18-49 during the May 2018 sweep, based on Most Current Data from Nielsen Media Research. For the 4th sweep in a row, “Nightline” led CBS’ “The Late Late Show with James Corden” (419,000 and 303,000, respectively) in Adults 25-54 (+16,000) and Adults 18-49 (+18,000). In fact, “Nightline” beat the CBS program by its largest-ever advantage in Adults 18-49 during a May sweep.

“Nightline” narrowed its gaps with NBC’s “Late Night with Seth Meyers” from the previous sweep (February 2018) by more than half in all key target demos: Total Viewers (-51% – 177,000 vs. 358,000), Adults 25-54 (-51% – 110,000 vs. 224,000) and Adults 18-49 (-55% – 84,000 vs. 187,000).

“Nightline” decreased its margins with NBC’s “Late Night with Seth Meyers” from the year-ago sweep (May 2017) across the board: Total Viewers (-13% – 177,000 vs. 204,000), Adults 25-54 (-4% – 110,000 vs. 115,000) and Adults 18-49 (-28% – 84,000 vs. 117,000), posting its closest key Adult performances for the month in 3 years – since May 2015.

2018 May Sweep (4/26-5/23/18 – Complete 28 Nights – Live + Same Day)

ABC won its 5th straight May Sweep in Adults 18-49 (1.0/4), scoring its longest winning streak for the month in more than 26 years– predating the start of Nielsen’s electronic database in September 1991.
  • Highest-Rated Series in the May Sweep: ABC claimed a network-leading 8 of the Top 15 broadcast series during May with Adults 18-49, including the No. 1 series/comedy with “Roseanne,” the No. 1 unscripted series with “American Idol-SUN” and the No. 1 drama with “Grey’s Anatomy”: “Roseanne” – No. 1, “American Idol-SUN” and “Grey’s Anatomy” tied at No. 4, “American Idol-MON” and “The Middle” tied at No. 6, “Modern Family” – No. 13, while “The Goldbergs” and “black-ish” tied at No. 15. In addition, ABC’s “American Idol-MON” stood as May’s most-watched unscripted series overall, drawing more viewers than both installments of NBC’s “The Voice.”
