Kyle Dixon and Michael Stein, the Duo Behind Phenomenon 'Stranger Things,' Bring Silicon Valley in the '90s to Life Through Sound

(WASHINGTON, DC/LOS ANGELES - July 25, 2018) - National Geographic has brought Emmy award-winning composers Kyle Dixon and Michael Stein on board to create a powerful soundtrack for its groundbreaking new show VALLEY OF THE BOOM. From executive producers Arianna Huffington and Matthew Carnahan ("House of Lies"), limited series VALLEY OF THE BOOM, set to premiere this winter, charts the meteoric rise and cataclysmic burst of the dot-com bubble.
This latest announcement continues National Geographic's tradition of tapping best-in-class composers to score the emotional narrative of the network's premium content programming. Previous collaborations include Hans Zimmer for GENIUS, Nick Cave and Warren Ellis for MARS, Philip Glass for JANE and Daniel Pemberton for ONE STRANGE ROCK.

Dixon and Stein are best known for their work on the soundtrack of "Stranger Things," for which they received two Grammy nominations as well as a Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Main Title Theme Music. Making up half of the Austin band S U R V I V E, the duo flawlessly combines synth-heavy original music with the hits of the decade to create a nostalgic tribute to days gone by while maintaining a modern feel. Masters of their craft, Dixon and Stein continue to find ways to push the boundaries of music and television while remaining true to the narrative of their projects.
"We have long been inspired by the rich history and bright music from the 1990s, so when we learned of National Geographic's VALLEY OF THE BOOM, we were thrilled to be collaborating," said Dixon and Stein. "Sound shapes story, and we want this soundtrack to reflect the unconventional yet exhilarating era Matthew Carnahan exposes in the series."

Carolyn Bernstein, executive vice president of global scripted development and production, said, "Kyle and Michael are singular, groundbreaking composers and we're honored that they're sharing their immense talents with National Geographic and VALLEY OF THE BOOM. Their work will add yet another boundary-pushing layer to this unique, disruptive show."

VALLEY OF THE BOOM takes an adrenaline-fueled ride through the culture of speculation, innovation and disruption during Silicon Valley's unprecedented tech boom and subsequent bust in the 1990s. It's a timely and captivating story, starring two-time Emmy award-winning actor Bradley Whitford, Steve Zahn and Lamorne Morris, told through an irreverent blend of drama, comedy and pathos. While most of the show is scripted, showrunner and director Carnahan weaves in select documentary elements that help tell the true inside story of the internet's fascinating formative years.
VALLEY OF THE BOOM is produced by STX Entertainment's TV studio, STXtv, for National Geographic, with creator, showrunner, director and executive producer Carnahan (Showtime's "House of Lies") at the helm and executive producer Huffington (founder of The Huffington Post, founder and CEO of Thrive Global and the author of 15 books, including "Thrive" and "The Sleep Revolution").

Carnahan and Huffington are joined by fellow executive producers Jason Goldberg (E!'s "The Platinum Life," MTV's "Punk'd"), Brant Pinvidic (Spike TV's "Bar Rescue") and David Walpert ("House of Lies," "New Girl") and co-executive producers David Newsom, who will lead the nonscripted unit of the production, and Gary Goldman. Joel Ehninger of Matthew Carnahan Circus Products is co-executive producer. For National Geographic, Carolyn G. Bernstein is executive vice president and head of global scripted development and production, and for STXtv, Jada Miranda is executive vice president and head of scripted television, responsible for development and oversight of all of STXtv's scripted projects.
