’20/20′ REPORTS ON DAUGHTER’S FIGHT FOR JUSTICE AFTER MOTHER WAS ALLEGEDLY KILLED IN HUSBAND’S MURDER-FOR-HIRE PLOT
Hour Details Break in Case From Last Month and Husband’s Alleged Involvement With Illegal Drug Distribution Ring
’20/20′ Airs Friday, Nov. 23 (10:01 – 11:00 p.m. EST), on ABC
20/20” reports on Kim Pack’s five-year-long fight for justice after her mother, New Jersey radio host April Kauffman, was allegedly murdered by a hit man hired by her husband, Dr. James “Jim” Kauffman. Jim was charged with the murder of April and with allegedly running an illegal drug distribution ring with members of the Pagans Motorcycle Club. Jim’s charges came after prosecutor Damon Tyner, appointed to his position in 2017, dug into the cold case of April’s murder. “20/20” has been following the case for years and features new details on a break in the case that occurred just last month when Ferdinand “Freddy” Augello, a member of the Pagans, was found guilty of April’s murder, conspiracy to commit murder and with leading the drug ring. In the hour, ABC News correspondent Deborah Roberts interviews Kim and Tyner, and reports on the alleged double life that Jim was leading. “20/20” airs Friday, Nov. 23 (10:01–11:00 p.m. EST), on ABC.
Kim discusses her mother’s complicated relationship with Jim; Jim’s unusual behavior following April’s murder, including auctioning off her items after her death without telling Kim and remarrying 15 months later; Jim’s lies about his military involvement and decorated war veteran status; and her relentless search for justice. “20/20” also includes interviews with Arthur Gropper, April’s radio co-host on “The King Arthur Radio Show”; April’s friends Lee Darby and Peg O’Boyle; Patrick and Andrew D’Arcy, Kim’s civil attorneys in her wrongful death suit against Jim; and James Scoppa, lead detective on April’s murder case.
On May 10, 2012, April was found dead, shot multiple times, in her Linwood, New Jersey, home. When Kim arrived on the scene she immediately accused Jim of being involved. However, Jim had an alibi and the case moved slowly for five years until Tyner came on the scene. Within months, Jim was charged with April’s murder for allegedly hiring a member of the motorcycle gang to kill April and with his alleged involvement in drug trafficking with members of the Pagans. Augello will be sentenced in December.
“20/20” is anchored by David Muir and Amy Robach. David Sloan is senior executive producer.
