ABC’s “The View” averaged 2.707 million Total Viewers, 403,000 Women 25-54 and 280,000 Women 18-49, during the week of April 22, 2019, based on Live + Same Day Data from Nielsen Media Research.
“The View” improved on the previous week of originals (w/o 4/8/19) in Total Viewers (+12,000 – 2.707 million vs. 2.695 million).
On Friday (4/26/19), with guest former Vice President Joe Biden in his first interview since announcing his 2020 presidential run, “The View” delivered its most-watched Friday telecast (3.042 million) in 15 months – since 1/12/18.
Season to date, amongst all network and syndicated daytime talk shows and news programs (24 Total), “The View” (2.848 million) ranks No. 4, trailing only “Dr. Phil” (4.175 million), “Ellen” (3.109 million) and “Live with Kelly and Ryan” (2.997 million).

ABC’s ‘Idol’ Scores a Season High in Viewers and Its 2nd Best Adult 18-49 Rating

During the week of April 22, 2019, ABC finished No. 1 in prime time among Adults 18-49 (0.8/4-tie), ranking as the No. 1 broadcast net for the 2nd week in a row.

Rankings: ABC’s “American Idol” ranked as the week’s No. 2 broadcast TV show in Adults 18-49, behind only the series-finale-nearing CBS’ “The Big Bang Theory.” In fact, ABC delivered 3 of the Top 10 broadcast TV shows in Adults 18-49: “American Idol-Sun” – No. 2, “NFL Draft on ABC” – No. 5 and “America’s Funniest Home Videos” – No. 8. In addition, “American Idol” placed among the Top 5 most-watched TV shows overall (No. 5), standing as TV’s No. 1 unscripted series and drawing more viewers than NBC’s “The Voice” for the first time this season.
 
Editors, please note: ABC’s “American Idol-Sun” (4/28/19) adjusted up in the Live + Same Day National numbers to 8.7 million viewers and a 1.6/7 in Adults 18-49 (from the initially reported 7.9 million and 1.4/6), marking the show’s most-watched telecast this season and its 2nd highest young adult rating, trailing only its season premiere and by just 1-tenth.

ABC Wins Sunday With Best-Since-Premiere Results on the Night for ‘Idol’

ABC’s ‘Shark Tank’ Generates Its Most-Watched Telecast in 8 Weeks

ABC Sunday Prime Time (7:00-11:00 p.m.—6.4 million and 1.2/5 in AD18-49):
Posting gains across its lineup, ABC shot to the top of Sunday in Adults 18-49 (1.2/5), beating NBC by 71% (0.7/3), CBS by 100% (0.6/3) and Fox by 100% (0.6/3). In fact, for the 3rd week in a row with “AFV,” “Idol” and “Shark Tank,” ABC stood as the No. 1 broadcaster in all 4 hours of Sunday’s prime timeamong Adults 18-49. ABC was also the most-watched network overall on Sunday night (6.4 million). ABC’s “American Idol” continued its run as Sunday’s No. 1 broadcast programamong Adults 18-49. In addition, for the week, ABC’s “Idol” (7.9 million and 1.4/6) topped both editions of NBC’s “The Voice” for the first time this season in both Total Viewers and Adults 18-49, outperforming the NBC singing competition on Monday (7.6 million and 1.2/5) and Tuesday (6.3 million and 0.9/4).  

  • In the 7 o’clock hour, ABC’s “America’s Funniest Home Videos” spiked over its last original telecast 3 weeks ago by 10% in Total Viewers (5.7 million vs. 5.1 million) and by 38% in Adults 18-49 (1.1/6 vs. 0.8/4).



  • Building over its lead-in at 8:00 p.m. (+39%/+27%), ABC’s “American Idol” more than doubled NBC’s “World of Dance” head-to-head in the 2-hour slot in Total Viewers (+132%—7.9 million vs. 3.4 million) and delivered 75% more Adults 18-49 (1.4/6 vs. 0.8/3).  “Idol” also topped its time slot in Total Viewers (7.9 million) to stand as Sunday’s most-watched entertainment program. ABC’s “American Idol” grew week to week by 11% in Total Viewers (7.9 million vs. 7.1 million) and by 8% in Adults 18-49 (1.4/6 vs. 1.3/6), posting best-since-premiere numbers on the night—since 3/3/19.

  • At 10:00 p.m., ABC’s “Shark Tank” led its hour among Adults 18-49 (0.8/4) by 33% each over NBC’s “Good Girls” (0.6/3) and CBS’ “Madam Secretary” (0.6/3). “Shark Tank” improved from the prior week by 8% in Total Viewers (4.1 million vs. 3.8 million) and held even Adults 18-49 (0.8/4), delivering its most-watched telecast overall in 8 weeks—since 3/3/19.

Boosted by a winning debut for “Bless This Mess” and the season finale of “The Rookie,” ABC ran in a near-tie for No. 1 with CBS on Tuesday in Adults 18-49 (0.8/4 vs. 0.9/4), jumping 33% over the prior week for a 12-week highwith its regular lineup on the night—since 1/22/19.

  • Leading off the night at 8:00 p.m., ABC’s “American Housewife” improved over the prior week in Total Viewers (+8%–3.9 million vs. 3.6 million) and Adults 18-49 (+14%–0.8/4 vs. 0.7/4), drawing its biggest audience in 7 weeks—since 2/26/19.



  • At 8:30 p.m., ABC’s “The Kids Are Alright” gained 7% in viewers week to week (3.1 million vs. 2.9 million) and rose 17% in Adults 18-49 (0.7/3 vs. 0.6/3) for its most-watched telecast in 7 weeks—since 2/26/19.

  • At 9:00 p.m., ABC’s “black-ish” jumped week to week by 24% in Total Viewers (3.5 million vs. 2.8 million) and by 14% in Adults 18-49 (0.8/4 vs. 0.7/3), attracting its biggest audience since December and hitting a 7-week high with young adults—since 12/11/18 and 2/26/19, respectively.



  • Building on its lead-in at 9:30 p.m. (+13%), ABC’s debut of “Bless This Mess” won in its half-hour among Adults 18-49 (0.9/4). “Bless This Mess” improved over the week-earlier season finale of “Splitting Up Together” in the half-hour by 84% in Total Viewers (4.6 million vs. 2.5 million) and by 50% in Adults 18-49 (0.9/4 vs. 0.6/3), delivering ABC’s biggest audience of the season with series programming in the slot and the Net’s top young adult number since October (since 10/30/18).  Versus the Live + Same Day season average for “Splitting Up Together” (2.7 million and 0.6/3), “Bless This Mess” improved its half-hour for ABC by 1.9 million viewers and by 50% in Adults 18-49.

  • At 10:00 p.m., ABC’s season finale of “The Rookie” ranked in No. 1 in its hour with Adults 18-49 (0.7/3-tie), beating NBC’s “New Amsterdam” for the first time(+17%–0.6/3). “The Rookie grew by double digits week to week in Total Viewers (+10%–4.0 million vs. 3.6 million) and Adults 18-49 (+17%–0.7/3 vs. 0.6/3), drawing its largest audience in 3 weeks—since 3/26/19. On average during its first season, “The Rookie” improved Tuesday’s 10 o’clock hour for ABC over the comparable weeks last season by an enormous 83% in Total Viewers and 40% in Adults 18-49, qualifying as ABC’s most-watched series in the time slot in 6 years—since “Body of Proof” during the 2012/13 season.

Airing from 8:00-10:00 p.m. opposite NBC’s “The Voice,” ABC’s “American Idol” grew for the 2nd straight week in Total Viewers (+9% – 7.1 million vs. 6.5 million) and gained 9% in Adults 18-49 (1.2/5 vs. 1.1/5 – which adjusted up from a 1.0/4 in the early numbers), marking its most-watched Monday telecast this season and tying its season high on the night with young adults.

  • Ranking as Monday’s No. 2 TV show, ABC’s “American Idol: Top 10 Reveal” came within a best-of-season 535,000 viewers of catching NBC’s “The Voice” (7.054 million vs. 7.589 million) and within 1-tenth of a rating point in Adults 18-49 (1.2/5 vs. 1.3/6). 



  • ABC’s “American Idol” once again stood as the No. 1 most social prime-time series on Monday night with 1,500,000 social interactions, towering over NBC’s “The Voice (370,300).

In the Live + 3 Day numbers, last week’s telecast of “For The People” delivered the series’ biggest lift this season among Adults 18-49 (+80%), which led to a new season high L+3 rating (0.9/4).

“American Idol” (8:00-10:00 p.m. – 6.4 million and 1.0/4 in AD18-49):
  Despite airing against CBS’ broadcast of the men’s NCAA Basketball Championship from 8:00-10:00 p.m., ABC’s “American Idol” rose week to week with Total Viewers (+3% – 6.4 million vs. 6.2 million) and held steady with Adults 18-49 (1.0/4 vs. 1.1/5), narrowing the Adult 18-49 gap with “The Voice” to just 2-tenths of a rating point versus 5-tenths the prior week for its closest finish this season with the NBC unscripted series. In addition, ABC’s “American Idol” beat NBC’s “The Voice” for the first time this season in Adults 18-34, leading by 17%.

Monday’s Night 2 of “American Idol: All-Star Duets” grew from the prior night’s Sunday telecast by 5% in Total Viewers and held even in Adults 18-49.
 
ABC’s “American Idol” continued its run as the No. 1 most social prime-time series on Monday night with 741,000 social interactions.

“The Fix” (10:00-11:00 p.m. – 3.3 million and 0.5/2 in AD18-49):
  In the 10 o’clock hour, ABC’s “The Fix” improved week to week by 11% in Total Viewers (3.3 million vs. 3.0 million) and held even with Adults 18-49 (0.5/2).

Airing from 9:00-11:00 p.m. on Friday night, ABC’s “20/20” scored its 14th week in a row as Friday’s No. 1 newsmagazine(leading on each telecast in its new 2-hour format), beating NBC’s “Dateline” (10:00-11:00 p.m.) in Total Viewers (+22% – 3.9 million vs. 3.2 million), Adults 18-49 (+40% – 0.7/3 vs. 0.5/3) and Adults 25-54 (+38% – 1.1/4 vs. 0.8/3). In fact, “20/20” attracted a larger audience than “Dateline” for their 13th straight matchup on the night, maintaining its longest winning streak over the NBC newsmagazine in 10 years – since a streak in January–April 2009 (1/2-4/10/09).

Season to date, “20/20” is up from the same point last year with Total Viewers (+25% – 5.0 million vs. 4.0 million), Adults 18-49 (+13% – 0.9/4 vs. 0.8/3) and Adults 25-54 (+18% – 1.3/5 vs. 1.1/4), standing as Friday’s No. 1 newsmagazine in all three measures. 
  In addition, “20/20” leads “Dateline-Fri” in all key target demos: Total Viewers (+9% – 5.0 million vs.  4.6 million), Adults 18-49 (+13% – 0.9/4 vs. 0.8/4) and Adults 25-54 (+8% – 1.3/5 vs. 1.2/5), leading the NBC newsmagazine in Total Viewers for the first time at this point of the season in 3 years and in Adults 18-49 and Adults 25-54 in 5 years – since the 2015-2016 and the 2013-2014 seasons, respectively.

  The special on the complex mystery behind the attack of Inna Budnytska is part of “20/20” two-hour documentary programming. The original eight-week two-hour programming lineup has been extended to 15 weeks and will run through April 12. Since the two-hour documentaries premiered on Jan. 4, “20/20” has been Friday’s No. 1 newsmagazine each week in all key demos: Total Viewers, Adults 18-49 and Adults 25-54.

  On its fifth of five original shows broadcasting for the first time from Las Vegas (Friday, 4/5/19), ABC’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” closed out the week with its highest-rated telecast of the week on Friday in Households (2.0/5) in the 56 Metered Markets. Friday’s telecast grew over the prior day by 11% in Households (1.8/5), as well as opening night on Monday by 11% (1.8/5). Friday’s show welcomed Celine Dion and Chris Tucker.

ABC’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” soared over its most recent original Friday telecast (airing from Brooklyn on 10/19/18) by 18% in Homes (1.7/4) to post its top-rated Friday original since June 2018 – since an NBA Finals-led broadcast on 6/8/18.

  With strong performances from its Thursday dramas, ABC dominated Thursday night in Adults 18-49 (1.0/5), beating CBS by 25% (0.8/4), NBC by 67% (0.6/3) and Fox by 100% (0.5/2).

At 8:00 p.m., ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy” finished as Thursday’s No. 1 TV program among Adults 18-49 (1.5/7) and maintained its delivery week to week. 

At 9:00 p.m., ABC’s “Station 19” ranked No. 1 in its hour for the 2nd week in a row with Adults 18-49 (0.9/4-tie) and held even with the prior week. 

At 10:00 p.m., ABC’s “For The People” held exactly even week to week in Total Viewers (3.1 million) and Adults 18-49 (0.5/2). In the Live + 3 Day numbers, last week’s telecast of “For The People” delivered the series’ biggest lift this season among Adults 18-49 (+80%), which led to a new season high L+3 rating (0.9/4).

ABC News’ “Nightline” ranked No. 1 in Total Viewers (1.284 million) during the week of April 1, 2019, based on Live + Same Day Data from Nielsen Media Research. “Nightline” beat CBS’ “The Late Late Show with James Corden” (1.247 million) by 37,000 and NBC’s “Late Night with Seth Meyers” (1.241 million) by 43,000.

In addition, “Nightline” (447,000 and 329,000, respectively) led CBS’ “The Late Late Show with James Corden” (362,000 and 264,000, respectively) in Adults 25-54 (+85,000) and Adults 18-49 (+65,000), turning in its largest news demo advantage in nearly 6 months – since w/o 10/15/18, based on original telecasts.
         
  For the 2nd week in a row, “Nightline” posted gains week to week (1.192 million, 403,000 and 300,000, respectively, for w/o 3/25/19) in all key target demos Total Viewers (+8%), Adults 25-54 (+11%) and Adults 18-49 (+10%). In fact, “Nightline” hit a 5-week best in Adults 25-54 and an 11-week high in Adults 18-49 – since weeks of 2/25/19 and 1/14/19, respectively.

Season to date, “Nightline” is leading CBS’ “The Late Late Show with James Corden” in Adults 25–54 (+33,000 – 451,000 vs. 418,000) and Adults 18–49 (+21,000 – 329,000 vs. 308,000).

Stories reported on “Nightline” last week included a visit to the border where families of migrants are being smuggled through treacherous conditions and risking their lives to reach the U.S.; actress and country singer Jana Kramer and her husband, Mike Caussin’s, first sit-down interview after they shared their story publicly of Caussin’s struggle with sex addiction; a look at rap star Nipsey Hussle’s legacy on the Crenshaw, California, community; a teacher’s battle to reclaim her dignity after a private photo of her was circulated and resulted in losing her job; details of Felicity Huffman and Louri Loughlin’s appearance in federal court; and interviews with global superstar Celine Dion and Gigi Gorgeous.

1st Quarter 2019:

ABC’s “The View” delivered 2.986 million Total Viewers, 495,000 Women 25-54 and 341,000 Women 18-49 during the 1st Quarter 2019, based on Most Current Data from Nielsen Media Research.

For the 2nd quarter in a row, “The View” improved on the previous quarter (2.766 million, 441,000 and 310,000, respectively, on 4Q18) across the board: Total Viewers (+8%), Women 25-54 (+12%) and Women 18-49(+10%).

For the 1st quarter, amongst all network and syndicated daytime talk shows and news programs (22 Total), “The View” (2.986 million) ranked No. 4, trailing only “Dr. Phil” (4.317 million), “Ellen” (3.244 million) and “Live with Kelly and Ryan” (3.070 million).

Week of March 25, 2019:

ABC’s “The View” averaged 2.818 million Total Viewers, 441,000 Women 25-54 and 295,000 Women 18-49, during the week of March 25, 2019, based on Live + Same Day Data from Nielsen Media Research.

For the 3rd consecutive week, “The View” improved on the same week last year (w/o 3/26/18) in Total Viewers (+1% – 2.818 million vs. 2.803 million).

Season to date, amongst all network and syndicated daytime talk shows and news programs (23 Total), “The View” (2.879 million) ranks No. 4, trailing only “Dr. Phil” (4.216 million), “Ellen” (3.180 million) and “Live with Kelly and Ryan” (3.005 million).

ABC News’ “Nightline” ranked No. 1 in Adults 25-54 (403,000) and Adults 18-49 (300,000) during the week of March 25, 2019, based on Live + Same Day Data from Nielsen Media Research. “Nightline” beat CBS’ “The Late Late Show with James Corden” (328,000 and 227,000, respectively) in Adults 25-54 (+75,000) and Adults 18-49 (+73,000), posting its largest margins in both key Adult demos in 4 weeks—since w/o 2/25/19.

“Nightline” improved on the previous week (1.185 million, 399,000 and 279,000, respectively, for w/o 3/18/19) across the board: Total Viewers (+1%), Adults 25-54 (+1%) and Adults 18-49 (+8%).

Season to date, “Nightline” is leading CBS’ “The Late Late Show with James Corden” in Adults 25–54 (+31,000 – 450,000 vs. 419,000) and Adults 18–49 (+19,000 – 329,000 vs. 310,000).

1st Quarter 2019:

ABC News’ “Nightline” drew 1.288 million Total Viewers, 439,000 Adults 25-54 and 317,000 Adults 18-49 during the 1st Quarter 2019, based on Most Current Data from Nielsen Media Research. “Nightline” beat CBS’ “The Late Late Show” (409,000 and 296,000, respectively) in Adults 25-54 (+30,000) and Adults 18-49 (+21,000).

For the 2nd quarter in a row, “Nightline” narrowed its quarter-to-quarter gap with NBC’s “Late Night with Seth Meyers” in Adults 25-54 (-3% – 94,000 vs. 97,000).

“Nightline” cut its margins with NBC’s “Late Night with Seth Meyers” from the year-ago 1st quarter in all key target demos: Total Viewers (-8% – 171,000 vs. 186,000) Adults 25-54 (-29% – 94,000 vs. 132,000) and Adults 18-49 (-28% – 81,000 vs. 113,000).

Stories reported on “Nightline” last week included a feature on three couples who shared their intimate IVF journeys as they struggled to become parents, a look at the lives of burned-out millennials who have found alternatives to the 9-to-5 work grind, the latest reactions as charges were dropped against Jussie Smollett, controversial YouTube star Logan Paul’s satirical documentary inside a flat Earth convention and interviews with makeup artist and influencer James Charles, former prosecutor Marcia Clark and the filmmakers of a documentary on Aretha Franklin.

NOTE: CBS’ “The Late Late Show” was delayed on Thursday (3/28/19) and Friday (3/29/19) and each telecast was retitled due to NCAA basketball; ratings for both days are excluded from the averages. In addition, for the week, repeats of NBC’s “Late Night with Seth Meyers” were retitled to “Late Night with Seth Meyers-SM.” The telecasts are excluded from the season averages. “The Late Late Show’s” averages are based on 3 days (Monday-Wednesday), while “Nightline” and “Late Night with Seth Meyers” are based on 5 days.

Season to Date ‘20/20’ Is Up From Same Point Last Year Across the Board

Airing from 9:00-11:00 p.m., ABC’s “20/20” marked its 13th straight week as Friday’s No. 1 newsmagazine(leading on each telecast in its new 2-hour format). The ABC newsmagazine towered over NBC’s “Dateline” (10:00-11:00 p.m.), leading by 34% in Total Viewers (4.3 million vs. 3.2 million), by 75% in Adults 18-49 (0.7/3 vs. 0.4/2) and by 43% in Adults 25-54 (1.0/4 vs. 0.7/3). In fact, “20/20” drew more viewers than “Dateline” for their 12th consecutive matchup on the night, delivering its longest winning streak over the NBC newsmagazine in 10 years—since a streak in January-April 2009 (1/2-4/10/09).

Season to date, “20/20” is up from the same point last year with Total Viewers (+25% – 5.0 million vs. 4.0 million), Adults 18-49 (+13% – 0.9/4 vs. 0.8/3) and Adults 25-54 (+18% – 1.3/5 vs. 1.1/4), standing as Friday’s No. 1 newsmagazine in all three measures.

In addition, “20/20” leads “Dateline-Fri” in all key target demos: Total Viewers (+11% – 5.0 million vs. 4.5 million), Adults 18-49 (+13% – 0.9/4 vs. 0.8/4) and Adults 25-54 (+8% – 1.3/5 vs. 1.2/5), leading the NBC newsmagazine in Total Viewers for the first time at this point of the season in 3 years and in Adults 18-49 and Adults 25-54 in 5 years—since the 2015-16 and the 2013-14 seasons, respectively.

1st Quarter 2019

During the 1st Quarter 2019, “20/20” improved on the year-ago quarter (1Q18) by double digits: Total Viewers (+22% – 5.5 million vs. 4.5 million), Adults 18-49 (+11% – 1.0/5 vs. 0.9/4) and Adults 25-54 (+25% – 1.5/6 vs. 1.2/4). “20/20” also posted double-digits gains on the previous quarter (4/Q18) in Total Viewers (+38% – 5.5 million vs. 4.0 million), Adults 18-49 (+43% – 1.0/5 vs. 0.7/3) and Adults 25-54 (+50% – 1.5/6 vs. 1.0/4), marking its strongest quarter performances across the board in 2 years—since 1Q17.

“20/20” led “Dateline-Fri” in all key measures during the quarter: Total Viewers (+28% – 5.5 million vs. 4.3 million), Adults 18-49 (+25% – 1.0/5 vs. 0.8/4) and Adults 25-54 (+25% – 1.5/6 vs. 1.2/5), leading the NBC newsmagazine during a 1st quarter in Adults 18-49 and Adults 25-54 for the first time in 5 years—since 1Q14. Further, “20/20” outperformed “Dateline” during any quarter in both key Adult demos in more than 3 years—since 4Q15. “20/20” beat “Dateline” in Total Viewers for the first time during any quarter in 2 years—since 1Q17.

The special on Raven Abaroa is part of “20/20” two-hour documentary programming. The original eight-week, two-hour programming lineup has been extended to fifteen weeks and will run through April 12. Since the two-hour documentaries premiered on Jan. 4, “20/20” has been Friday’s No. 1 newsmagazine each week in all key demos: Total Viewers, Adults 18-49 and Adults 25-54.
