“48 HOURS” TRUE CRIME SATURDAY DOUBLE FEATURE

Peter Van Sant and 48 HOURS investigate the death of 13-year-old Nicole Lovell and how her killer found the vulnerable teen on the popular chat app in an encore of “Killer App” to be broadcast Saturday, August 31 (9:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network. Lovell, 13, signed on to the app looking for a friend. With a few swipes on her smartphone, Lovell became a victim of the occasionally dangerous world of anonymous online friending, where predators, using fake names and profiles, hunt for victims. The broadcast examines how parents, thanks to so-called “parent-proof” chat platforms, often don’t know what their kids are doing on their phones, laptops, tablets or computers, until something goes wrong. “Killer App” also focuses on a Spokane, Wash., family that found their daughter was communicating with a 30-year-old man online and planning to run off that night. What the parents did might shock some – but to them it was a matter of life or death.
Texas judge Julie Kocurek was shot multiple times, by an unknown man, in front of her teenage son, in the driveway of their home. She survived and shares her emotional story and her work to stop others from being targeted in an encore of 48 HOURS: “Live to Tell: The Vendetta” to be broadcast Saturday, August 31 (10:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network. Anchored by Jim Axelrod, “Live to Tell: The Vendetta” is the inspiring story of a woman who overcame incredible odds to survive and is now on a mission to stop future attacks on judges. Told through Kocurek’s point of view, “Live to Tell: The Vendetta” explores those terrifying moments when an assailant began shooting at her car as her son stood outside, and how she found the strength to live. The story also describes Kocurek’s efforts to make sure every tip of a plot against a judicial staffer is thoroughly investigated and safeguards are taken to limit access to judges’ personal information.
