On the Friday, September 20th edition of “Tamron Hall,” actress
Catherine Oxenberg shared her story about her daughter’s involvement in NXIVM, a self-described multi-level marketing company led by Keith Raniere, which was recently exposed as a sex cult. Oxenberg shares her journey during which she realized her daughter
India was in danger and channeled her “maternal, primal instincts” to help bring India to safety.
On Oxenberg’s failed plan to stage an intervention for her daughter India:
“On top of knowing what’s going on and being told that her hair is falling out and she hasn’t had her period, I’m now panicking that she’s psychologically
compromised, trying to pretend that everything’s fine. It was really very hard for that one month of planning. On top of that, two days before she came back to LA, I found out that she’d been branded with his initials. I lost my mind.”
Oxenberg’s story is told in the Lifetime movie “Escaping The NXIVM Cult” and in her book
Captive: A Mother’s Crusade To Save Her Daughter From The Terrifying Cult NXIVM.
Later, Tamron was joined by
Mark-Paul Gosselaar and Tika Sumpter from ABC’s “mixed-ish.” Gosselaar opened up about his personal background, sharing that he comes from a mixed race family, his father being Dutch and his mother being Indonesian. He opened up about his struggles
with identity and emphasizes the importance of the story that their upcoming series looks to tell. Sumpter and Gosselaar reflected on their early acting careers in “One Life to Live” and “Saved By The Bell,” respectively. Gosselaar talked about growing up
on “Saved By The Bell” and debunked rumors of a potential reboot.
Gosselaar on his experience growing up as a child with mixed race parents:
“I, fortunately and unfortunately, didn’t have this conversation growing up because of the way I looked. So I never had to explain what I was. I was
just Mark-Paul and I didn’t have to explain, like, I’m half Indonesian and have this conversation.”
On Gosselaar’s time on “Saved By The Bell” and what it was like for him to grow up on screen:
“It was awkward for me then, because again, it’s a very impressionable moment in your life, and to have it on your screen and for everyone to enjoy
while you’re going through - and we talk about it on the show - finding your identity. I was still struggling with what my identity was while I was playing another identity.”
