Raúl Juliá: The World’s a Stage, a special presentation of THIRTEEN’s American Masters and Latino Public Broadcasting’s VOCES, is a warm and revealing portrait of the charismatic, groundbreaking actor’s journey from his native Puerto Rico to the creative hotbed of 1960s New York City, to prominence on Broadway and in Hollywood. Filled with passion, determination and joy, Juliá’s brilliant and daring career was tragically cut short by his untimely death 25 years ago, at age 54. Told in his own voice through archival interviews and in the words of those who knew him best, the film traces Juliá’s personal and professional life while showcasing performances from his collaboration with Joseph Papp’s The Public Theater to his successful cinematic career. His best-known roles include the history-making productions of Titus Andronicus, Two Gentlemen of Verona with Clifton Davis, The Taming of the Shrew with Meryl Streep and The Threepenny Opera, the Broadway musical Nine, and films such as Kiss of the Spider Woman, Moon Over Parador, Romero, Presumed Innocent and The Addams Family.

Interviews with some of the most respected actors who worked alongside Juliá, including Anjelica Huston, Edward James Olmos, Rita Moreno, James Earl Jones, Sonia Braga, Rubén Blades and Esai Morales, illuminate his impact as an artist. In addition, actors John Leguizamo, Jimmy Smits, Andy Garcia and others share how they were profoundly influenced by Juliá and carry the torch of his legacy. Juliá’s personal side comes to life through never-before-seen family photos and home videos, along with reminiscences from his wife, Merel, his sons, relatives and friends, who share candid insights about his life away from the spotlight.

Ever-present throughout Juliá’s story is the cultural landscape of the entertainment world and the boundaries he broke. Before diversity and inclusion efforts were part of the national conversation, the big man with the engaging personality and accent was able to amass a varied body of timeless work that helped pave the way for Latino actors today. He was also a passionate and pioneering advocate of social causes, including ending hunger. In Juliá’s words, “It’s all done within a context of love. That’s the beauty of it, you see?”
Craft in America Seasons 1-4, 7 & 8

Craft in America explores the history and significance of the craft movement in the United States. Great Performances: Now Hear This

Laura, this looks great. I've made some changes in blue, mostly trimming detail that gives away some surprises in the episodes that are better teased, or to clarify the message. The show is a new TV format, something that hasn't been done before, so I think it's worth calling attention to that, rather than calling it a documentary. Many thanks for giving me the opportunity me to review this. Best- Harry

Viewers join Scott Yoo, renowned violinist and conductor of the Mexico City Philharmonic, in this new four-part miniseries that merges music, storytelling, travel, and culture to create a new television format. Scott Yoo travels through Italy, France, Germany, Spain, and Morocco as he searches for the secret histories of some of the greatest music ever written.

Each episode focuses on a great composer, tracing the creation of their masterpieces and the lasting impact of their music, while exploring little known or recently discovered work and new music they've inspired. In Northern Italy, Yoo investigates Vivaldi, and discovers a new piece, Vivaldi’s connection to Stradivarius, a trove of original manuscripts, and how Vivaldi’s music was almost lost to history. Next, he travels to Germany to explore Bach, where he discovers a riddle Bach left behind in his portrait. In trying to solve it, Yoo and his wife, the flutist Alice Dade, discover the secrets of Bach's melodic style, his rhythmic influences and keys to his true personality. Yoo then travels to Spain and Morocco to explore Scarlatti, the finest keyboard player in Europe, hired by the Queen of Spain as her personal instructor. Scarlatti incorporated the sounds of Spain into Vivaldi’s melodies and Bach’s fugues, to create a new musical language that inspired generations of musicians after him. Lastly, Yoo returns to Italy to follow in Handel’s footsteps, taking in the art, architecture, fashion, food, wine, light, and landscape that shaped this German composer for the rest of his life.

The Hudson River School: Part 2 - Cultivating A Tradition

At the beginning of the 19th century, English-born artist Thomas Cole and American engraver Asher Durand established an artistic movement in the vicinity of New York's Hudson River Valley based on their love of nature, fine art, and connection to the Spiritual. They would soon belong to a group of likeminded, committed followers who would come to be known as The Hudson River School. By mid-19th century members of The Hudson River School would come to create a style distinctively all their own. The first generation of Cole and Durand would give way to a second generation who would expand their palette with a sophisticated technique that was reflective, atmospheric and immersed in light. This artistic innovation was later hailed as, “The Luminist Movement.” The Hudson River School: Part 2 – Cultivating a Tradition tells the story of these revolutionary artists who became the greatest landscape painters in the world!
