On the Wednesday, October 30th edition of ‘Tamron Hall,’
Debra Newell (Los Angeles, CA), whose life story captivated the nation and inspired the podcast and television hit
Dirty John, opened up about out how John Meehan “looked like a good guy” online and why she decided to share her story, saying:
“With what I went through, I felt it was really important to let other women know what’s out there. Hopefully they don’t meet someone quite like John.”
Debra’s daughter
Terra Newell (Los Angeles, CA), joined the conversation detailing how she always questioned John and knew
“there was something off about him.” Terra’s suspicion, along with her siblings, led them to hire a private investigator who later uncovered that John was a con-man. On why Debra stayed with him after finding out:“There’s a lot behind it. He had a
reason for everything. I think for me it was so believable and he was so good to me. He treated me like a queen.”
On Debra reaching her breaking point when she finally decided to leave John:
“I had one foot in and one foot out. I was willing to listen, but there were too many things that I listened to and he changed the story. I had caught on at that point.”
Debra’s decision to leave sent John into a spiral, forcing Debra into hiding for seven months and putting her family in danger. Terra opened up to Tamron about her struggle
with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) following John’s violent knife attack, which ultimately ended in John’s death after Terra stabbed him in self-defense.
“I still have PTSD, I am working through it everyday...going to therapy...it’s been so traumatic, but I want people to know that you can make strides to get better and not to put a time limit on that because every day is a step.”
While discussing Debra’s new found love with boyfriend, Robert Reinhart, Tamron asked Debra how she found confidence in dating men after everything that happened. Debra shared,
“it was important for me to help other women and I felt like there were still great men out there.”
Also on today’s show, Tamron sat down with former intelligence officer
Debby Montgomery Johnson (Palm Beach, FL), a recent widow and the victim of an online dating scam that tricked her into sending a man she had never met more than $1 million dollars. Debby was introduced to Erik via a faith-based dating site while searching
for companionship after the death of her husband (Watch clip HERE). On why she sent
over $1 million dollars to a man she had never met over the course of two years, she noted,
“I had no reason not to trust. I always expected it to come back. There was no thought of it not coming back to me. He was family and I would do anything for my family.”
Closing out the show, dating expert
Devyn Simone, who met her fiance online, joined Tamron to share the dos and don'ts of online dating (Watch clip
HERE). Sharing advice on how to spot con artists, Devyn revealed her number one rule,
saying: “Treat any new online relationship like a new coworker. When you start the first day on the job, you're not telling your new coworker all of your business and you’re not giving them money - if he’s really into you and he or she wants the same things,
they’ll be patient.”
