“RAISING BOYS” NAVIGATES THE CHALLENGES OF PARENTING IN THE MODERN ERA

December 6, 2019 - CBSN, CBS News’ free 24/7 streaming news service, debuts its 50th Original documentary with “Raising Boys,” in which parents and experts of diverse backgrounds open up about the struggles and challenges of raising boys in an era of unprecedented freedom and uncertainty. “Raising Boys” is also the final installment in a new six-part CBSN Originals series titled “Speaking Frankly,” which brings viewers into conversations on topics that are often seen as impolite or too controversial to fully discuss.

“Raising Boys” explores how society’s changing perceptions of gender, combined with growing scrutiny from the “Me Too” movement, have shifted expectations for both parents and children. The traditional ways that boys are raised are now under a microscope with phrases like “boys will be boys” no longer being acceptable. The documentary also discusses how raising boys within the confines of traditional stereotypes can create an environment where they may repress the ability to be vulnerable and show emotion. Additionally, as the number of children identifying as gender non-conforming continues to rise, many parents are faced with the task of encouraging a child to be genuinely expressive, while also preparing them for society’s reactions.

The documentary highlights experts such as Dr. Michael Reichert, author of How to Raise a Boy, who stated “If we want to change the outcomes that boyhood produces, we can't look to the boys. We actually have to look to us and the messages that we give them.”

Additional topics in the “Speaking Frankly” series include non-monogamous relationships, child marriage in America, and how pornography is warping perspectives on sex and relationships.

The documentary is available now across all CBS News digital properties including CBSN, CBS News’ 24/7 streaming network. The documentary will also stream on CBSN on Sunday, December 8 at 8 p.m. ET.
