CBS NEWS CONTRIBUTOR MARIA ELENA SALINAS SHINES LIGHT ON AMERICA’S HOMELESSNESS CRISIS WITH MULTIPLATFORM SERIES
“Eye on America: America Left Behind” Reports on the Stories of the Working Poor Who Are Slipping into Homelessness
CBS News contributor Maria Elena Salinas will give viewers a unique look behind our nation’s crisis of homelessness, a problem affecting millions of American families, as CBS News presents a special edition of its investigative series “Eye on America” across all CBS News platforms. The unique series, “America Left Behind,” will examine how families throughout communities across America, who once lived paycheck to paycheck, fell through the cracks and found themselves homeless. The first installment aired on Thursday, Feb. 27, on CBS THIS MORNING (7:00-9:00 AM, ET) from the epicenter of the nation’s homelessness crisis in Los Angeles, Calif. “Our intention was to de-stigmatize homelessness,” Salinas said. “I wanted to show how it’s not only people who suffer from drug addiction and mental health issues that experience it, but also families with children who lose their jobs or have medical emergencies and are unable to pay the high cost of rent across the country.”
“America Left Behind” will be featured across CBS News platforms, including CBS THIS MORNING; the CBS EVENING NEWS WITH NORAH O’DONNELL; CBS THIS MORNING: SATURDAY; CBSN, the network’s 24/7 digital streaming news service; CBSNews.com; and CBS News Radio.
“By featuring ‘America Left Behind’ across CBS News platforms, we hope to shed a brighter light on the growing problem of homelessness and encourage solutions,” Kim Godwin, Executive Vice President of News, said.
On Friday, Feb. 28, the CBS EVENING NEWS with NORAH O’DONNELL will feature the second installment of “America Left Behind,” with a report from Victoria, Texas, a small community of 67,000 people where the homeless population has tripled since 2018.
CBS THIS MORNING: SATURDAY will air the third installment on Saturday, Feb. 29 from Seattle, Wash. Seattle has the third-highest rate of homelessness in the country, and the number of people sleeping in their cars has doubled in the past decade.
“One of the main things I learned from working on this series is that homelessness can happen to anyone,” Salinas said. “And once it happens, it’s very difficult to transition back into having a roof over your head. There are no easy solutions.”
The CBS News Radio Weekend Roundup will feature “America Left Behind” on affiliates across the country. Salinas will join correspondent Steve Dorsey with details on the current state of the homelessness crisis.
“Eye on America” is a renowned CBS News series featuring long-form reporting and in-depth storytelling that examines important issues affecting the country.
